Vestfold lies just south of Oslo and combines coastal scenery with traces from many different periods. Numerous small islands offer opportunities for sunbathing, as well as sailing. This combination is particularly striking at Mølen: the site is Norway’s largest pebble beach and part of the landscape left behind by the last Ice Age around 10,000 years ago. The cultural landscape also includes 230 Iron Age stone cairns.

Bird migration also gives Mølen a distinctive seasonal rhythm. Migratory birds visit the area twice a year: in spring, they head north, and in autumn, south again. If you are interested in birds, this seasonal pattern provides a concrete point of reference for planning your trip; the species you may see can vary.

Skerries, Islands and Paths by the Water

Færder National Park is a distinctive skerry landscape shaped by the immense ice masses of the Ice Age. It covers 340 square kilometres of mainland, islands, reefs and seabed in Færder Municipality. Boating, kayaking, hiking and swimming are among the popular outdoor activities along the coast. This lets you focus more on the water or on activities on land, while the landscape provides a shared setting for both.

Verdens Ende is a recreational area with fjord views, rocks, fishing spots and skerries. From there, Færder National Park can be reached by boat, car and public transport. Check transport options and access rules before your trip. For a walk along the coast, there is also a route from Åsgårdstrand to Tønsberg via Ringshaugstranda: it is about 10 kilometres long. Its approximate length makes it a clearly defined option alongside the various activities in the national park.

History from Trading Centre to Navy

In Larvik, Kaupang tells the story of trade and production during the Viking Age. The site was established around the year 800 as a centre for trade and production. A reconstructed Viking house and a model of the town are on display there. These two displays offer concrete insights into architecture and the townscape, complementing the historical context without reducing the long time span to a single find or building.

In Horten, the Marinemuseet is located at Karljohansvern. It is one of the oldest naval museums in the world and covers the history of the navy and the Royal Norwegian Navy—from the dissolution of the Kalmar Union to today’s Norwegian Special Operations Command. Visitors can go aboard the gunboat KNM Blink and the submarine KNM Utstein. If you would like to visit these vessels, check the current boarding arrangements in advance.

Art and Architectural History in Vestfold

Åsgårdstrand is associated with Edvard Munch’s life and work. Munch painted “The Bridge”, “Four Girls in Åsgårdstrand” and “The Dance of Life” there. His former home is a small museum, with its interior preserved as it was during his time there. Check the museum’s seasonal visiting arrangements before your trip.

In central Tønsberg, the Haugar Art Museum presents art in a permanent exhibition and in current exhibitions. The content of the current exhibitions changes. Fredriksvern Church in Stavern offers a different focus: it was built in 1756 and is considered Norway’s first garrison church. In Sandefjord, the Midtåsen estate features a sculpture park and views of Sandefjord.

These places and themes offer different points of focus: Mølen combines Ice Age landscapes with archaeological traces and seasonal bird migration, while Kaupang brings together trading history and reconstructions. Those interested in art can explore Munch’s connection to Åsgårdstrand and visit a museum in Tønsberg with both permanent and current exhibitions. For a defined coastal route, there is the approximately 10-kilometre path between Åsgårdstrand and Tønsberg; in Færder National Park, the options range from kayaking and boating to hiking and swimming.
