Sigerfjord is shaped by its fjord, mountains and mild climate; Sigerfjordstranda is an important coastal recreation area. Many buildings in the present-day village reflect its heyday at the beginning of the 20th century. The scenery, local history and trails give visitors different ways to shape their stay. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether the village’s character, the illuminated ski trail or a trip to Snytindhytta matters most to your travel plans.

Church and Local History

Sigerfjord Church was completed in 1933. It is a wooden long church with 250 seats; the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage’s list, updated in August 2026, includes it as a listed church. The altarpiece is believed to date from 1696. The two dates refer to different historical points: 1933 marks the completion of the church building, while 1696 is the attributed date of the painting. Together with the many buildings that reflect the village’s heyday, the church provides a tangible link to Sigerfjord’s local history.

Trails, Ski Trail and Seasonal Tours

A route to Snytindhytta marked by VesterĂĄlen Turlag starts at Austpollen in Sigerfjord. There is a car park at the starting point by the Rv. 85 tunnel entrance or at the Sigerfjord junction; the starting point is also accessible by scheduled bus. Check the timetable before travelling. For late winter, from late April to early May, the route recommends starting at Vangpollen in Sigerfjord: carry your skis over the first 200 to 300 metres of elevation, then continue to the cabin via Vangpollheia. Austpollen is part of the marked route; Vangpollen is the starting point for the seasonal recommendation. Snow and avalanche conditions vary, so check them before your trip. An illuminated ski trail of about 3 km maintained by Sigerfjord IL offers another local option.

More to Explore in the Wider Sortland Destination

The wider Sortland destination offers additional cultural and activity options. Kulturfabrikken in Sortland houses concert halls, a cinema, a library, a cultural school, exhibition halls and a café. Sortland Museum was established in 2004. Sortlandsmarka also has an illuminated ski trail, about 5 km long, making it longer than the roughly 3 km trail in Sigerfjord.

Akvakultur i VesterĂĄlen is located in the small village of Blokken in Sortland Municipality. It offers a guided exhibition tour and a RIB boat trip to a fish farm, as well as a tasting of its own smoked salmon. VesterĂĄlen Adventures offers a variety of boat tours throughout the year in the wider Sortland destination, including trips to Trollfjord. The experiences therefore differ in focus: fish farming, an exhibition and smoked salmon on the one hand, and boat tours, including trips to Trollfjord, on the other.

Sortland also offers opportunities for kayaking, mountaineering and fishing. Cultural and nature trails in the Sortland area include the Jennestad–Holmstaddalen Cultural Trail, the Sámi Cultural Trail in Holmstaddalen and the Selneselva Nature and Cultural Trail.
