At the Lofotr Viking Museum in Borg, VestvĂ„gĂžy, visitors can experience a living Viking Age setting. An actual chieftain’s farm from the Iron Age has been confirmed there. A reconstruction also illustrates the dimensions of a Viking Age longhouse: it is 83 metres long and is a reconstruction of the largest longhouse from that period ever discovered.

Viking Age and Fishing History

The Lofoten Museum also offers an introduction to the history of the island group. It stands on the site of the medieval town of Vágar; its manor house was completed in 1815. The museum explores the history of Lofoten fishing and shows the contrast between life in the manor house and in authentic fishermen’s rorbu cabins. Several boathouses, featuring a large collection of traditional wooden boats, are also part of the museum and can be explored by visitors.

The Lofoten War Memorial Museum offers another historical perspective. It displays uniforms and smaller objects from the Second World War, as well as rare photographs and prints from 1940 to 1945. The collection offers a distinct perspective on this period, alongside Lofoten’s cultural and fishing-history themes.

Among Peaks, Beaches and National Park

Hiking options range from peaceful walks along the shore and gentle trails across grassy moors to challenging summit climbs, such as Hermannsdalstind or the distinctive VÄgakallen. This offers a wide variety of ways to explore the area; terrain and conditions vary. Lofotodden National Park lies entirely on the outer side of MoskenesÞya, that is, on its western side. In Reine, the national park visitor centre has an exhibition about the protected area. Opening hours are seasonal, so check the current hours before visiting.

Beaches in the Lofoten Islands include Kvalvika Beach, Haukland Beach, Uttakleiv Beach, Ytresand Beach, Ramberg Beach, Unstad Beach and Skagsanden Beach. These names add to the choice between coast and mountains, without every beach necessarily offering the same experience. If you are planning a hike, you might first consider whether a walk along the shore or a challenging summit climb better suits your plans.

Water Activities and Seasonal Highlights

During the midnight sun, several operators in the Lofoten Islands run kayaking tours for beginners and experienced kayakers alike. As offerings can change, check the current tours before booking. For those interested in surfing, Unstad generally has gentle, beginner-friendly waves in summer; seasonal conditions may vary. In the Lofoten Islands, waves are generally smaller and less powerful in summer, and the water temperature is higher.

Stockfish is also part of the island group’s culinary history: it has been a staple there for centuries. The skrei season takes place every year from January to April; according to tradition, its history dates back to the Viking Age.

Getting There by Ferry

The direct ferry connection from BodĂž to Moskenes is the fastest ferry crossing to the Lofoten Islands. It takes about three and a half hours and carries vehicles as well as foot passengers. It is worth checking the latest ferry information when planning your trip, as journey times and service details may change.
