Sortland offers several different starting points for a trip: culture, named trails, winter sports and experiences on the water. Kulturfabrikken brings together various cultural institutions, while Sortlandsmarka has a floodlit ski trail and Blokken offers aquaculture experiences. When planning, you can start with your interestsâsuch as cultural trails, snow activities, a boat trip or fishingâinstead of reducing Sortland to a single theme.
Culture and History in Sortland
Kulturfabrikken in Sortland houses concert halls, a cinema, a library, a cultural school, exhibition halls and a café. Events, educational activities and exhibitions are all offered here. Sortland Museum was founded in 2004. If you would like to include culture in your trip, these two places offer different starting points: a venue with several institutions and a museum with its own institutional history.
Cultural Trails and Outdoor Activities
The JennestadâHolmstaddalen cultural trail and the SĂĄmi cultural trail in Holmstaddalen both include culture in their names. The Selneselva nature and cultural trail brings nature and culture together. SnytindhyttaâSigerfjord is listed as another hiking route in Sortland. These names offer different thematic starting points: trails explicitly described as cultural, a nature and cultural trail, and a named hiking route. Sortland also offers opportunities for kayaking, mountaineering and fishing. If you prefer to plan around activities rather than trail themes, you could focus on the water, the mountains or fishing.
Winter Activities
Ă nstadblĂ„heia Alpine Centre is approved for junior and senior slalom and junior giant slalom, and has its own childrenâs slope. Sortlandsmarka has a floodlit ski trail about five kilometres long. These offer different winter activities: designated alpine competition disciplines and a ski trail.
Aquaculture and Boat Trips
Akvakultur i VesterÄlen is located in the small village of Blokken in Sortland municipality. The provider offers a guided exhibition tour, an RIB ride to a fish farm and a tasting of smoked salmon from its own production. The offer therefore includes an exhibition, a boat trip and a locally produced product. VesterÄlen Adventures is based in Sortland and offers various boat trips year-round, including trips to the Trollfjord. These activities have different focuses: aquaculture and fish farming on the one hand, and boat trips with the Trollfjord as a named destination on the other.
Arriving with Hurtigruten
The Hurtigruten coastal ship calls at Sortland daily. As schedules may change, check the latest times before making specific travel plans. It is helpful to distinguish between the two: Hurtigruten provides the daily ship connection, while VesterÄlen Adventures offers excursion trips.
Cultural History in the Wider Lofoten Destination
In the wider Lofoten destination, the Lofotr Viking Museum in Borg offers its own focus on cultural history. An actual chieftainâs farmstead from the Iron Age has been confirmed there; visitors can experience a living Viking Age environment. The museum includes a reconstruction of an 83-metre-long Viking Age longhouse. It is a reconstruction of the largest longhouse from that period ever found.
