Fishing history, local walking trails and seaweed products give Napp several concrete points of interest for a stay. The E10, also called Kong Olavs vei, runs through the village. Napp is a fishing village with several fish-processing businesses and, at the same time, a fishing community from the recent past. This gives the village a distinctly maritime character when choosing accommodation; the trails and the Lofoten Seaweed shop add activities and a local place to visit. Another landmark lies just north of Napp: the eastern entrance to the road tunnel beneath Nappstraumen is located there.
Fishing and Trading History
After the war, further dredging and expansion of the harbour made Napp the largest fishing village in Flakstad. A shop was established in Napp in the 1850s, making it the first trading post in Flakstad outside Nusfjord and Sund. Heimgården, also known as Karl-Napp-gården, dates from around 1850. The building was constructed as the main house for a trader who ran a shop there. Its history thus spans trade in the 19th century and the development of the harbour in the post-war period.
Walks and Storbåthellaren
Local walking options include the path up to Mørkdalen and the path along the road to the head of the breakwater. If you are planning a longer hike, you can follow the trail from Napp several kilometres south to Storbåthellaren. This gives you a choice between a walk with a destination in the village and a longer route to an archaeological site.
Storbåthellaren lies on Nappstraumen and is a settlement site from the Late Stone Age, dated to around 4000 BC. In the wider travel destination of Flakstad, the site is an automatically protected archaeological heritage site and the oldest known Stone Age settlement site in Lofoten. The easiest way to reach it is by boat; a hiking trail from Napp also leads there. For specific details about access, it is recommended that you ask local residents.
Seaweed, Local Art and Coastal Birds
The Lofoten Seaweed shop in Napp sells seaweed products and gifts by local artists, and invites visitors to learn more about seaweed. Check the latest opening information before planning a visit, as it may change. In Nappstraumen, in the area around Napp, kelp is harvested by hand in cold, nutrient-rich waters.
Northeast of Øya on Napp, the bay and rock formations make an attractive nesting area for Arctic terns and common gulls. Nesting is seasonal, so the time of year is a relevant planning consideration if you want to include these birds as a nature interest on your trip.
