Fredvang combines hikes to Kvalvika and Ryten, the Mulstøa Coastal Walk and a distinctive cultural attraction at the Lofoten Peat Museum. Fishing and farming have shaped Fredvang and Krystad for generations and continue to influence both places today. Nature trails, birdlife and local history offer a range of topics to consider when planning your trip.

Hikes and trailheads

For the hike to Kvalvika and Ryten, the parking areas by the old school in Fredvang or in Innersand are the trailheads. The Mulstøa Coastal Walk starts at Fredvang’s main parking area by the old school. The old school is therefore a shared landmark; Innersand is another possible starting point for the hike to Kvalvika and Ryten. Parking regulations may change; check the current situation before setting out.

The hike to Kvalvika and Ryten is suitable in spring, summer and autumn; in winter, it is possible with skis or snowshoes. Check the weather and trail conditions before setting out. The trail from Fredvang to Kvalvika passes steep mountain cliffs, an emerald-green sea and an impressive sandy beach. The Mulstøa Coastal Walk offers a different natural setting: it follows wetlands along the winding Sandelva, known for their rich birdlife.

Local history and nature in the wider area

The Lofoten Peat Museum in Fredvang has a reconstructed 700-metre-long cableway from the museum building to the mountain. A model illustrates the entire process. Together, the cableway and model give the museum a distinct technical focus alongside the hiking trails.

In the wider destination of Flakstad, Kvalvika is in Flakstad Municipality and is part of Lofotodden National Park. Steep cliffs frame the beach on both sides of the bay. The landscapes there include dunes and meadows, mountain vegetation and some scree. Kvalvika is a popular hiking destination; from the summit of Ryten, you can look down on the long golden beach.

The wider destination of Flakstad also offers other cultural and activity-related attractions. Storbåthellaren is an automatically protected archaeological heritage site and the oldest known Stone Age settlement in Lofoten. Flakstad Church was completed in 1780. The wooden church with its onion-shaped dome is listed by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage and is considered worthy of preservation for its national value.

The Sund Fishery Museum has boat engines dating from approximately 1901 to 1970, as well as exhibits on fishing, boats and household items. The Sund Fishery Museum and the forge have remained unchanged since their establishment by Hans Gjertsen in 1947. Glasshytta på Vikten is Northern Norway’s oldest glassblowing workshop; visitors can watch the glassblower at work. Lofoten Beach Camp offers surf lessons for people of all ages. The E10, also known as Kong Olavs vei, runs through Flakstad Municipality.
