Whale watching tours are offered from Andenes year-round. On the tours, you can choose between a large traditional boat and a RIB boat. Departures and seasonal schedules may change; check the latest tour information before booking.
Whale Watching and the Whale Exhibition
The whale watching tour ticket includes a self-guided visit to the Whale Exhibition. During the peak season, it also includes access to evening lectures. If you plan to attend a lecture, note this seasonal condition and check the ticket’s current inclusions.
The Whale Exhibition can be visited independently or as part of a guided tour. This gives you two options for visiting the exhibition. The tour itself offers a choice between the large traditional boat and a RIB boat.
Discover the Whale Center
The Whale Exhibition’s skeleton hall displays complete skeletons of three different species of marine mammals. The Whale Fact Room introduces whale species through artefacts, facts and photographs, and offers insights into ongoing local whale research. The “Map & Briefing Room” focuses on Andenes: it explains the area’s unique geography and why it is a global hotspot for marine life. The exhibition therefore covers everything from marine mammals and research to the area’s geographical context.
The Whale Center has a wheelchair-accessible entrance. If this is important for your planning, you can confirm the latest accessibility information before your visit.
More culture in Andenes
The Andøy Museum in Andenes complements the Whale Center’s themes with a different perspective. Its exhibition explores the lives of hunters; the museum also provides information about the unique geology of the island of Andøya. This lets you include different areas of interest in your visit: the Whale Exhibition focuses on marine mammals, whale species and local whale research, while the Andøy Museum focuses on the lives of hunters and the island’s geology.
Andøy in the wider context
In the wider destination of Andøy, visitors can see Andenes Lighthouse as part of a guided tour up its stairs. The tour includes an exhibition, historical content and the view from the top. Before your trip, check whether the guided visit is available during your visit.
In summer, the wider destination of Andøy has a daily ferry service between Andenes and Gryllefjord on Senja. Hurtigruten also calls at Risøyhamn twice daily year-round. Timetables may change; check the latest information for the connection you plan to take.
The Norwegian Scenic Route Andøya is another point of interest for planning a trip in Andøy: it is part of National Cycle Route 1 and also follows EuroVelo 1, the “Atlantic Coast Route”. Weather and current road conditions are relevant for a cycling trip.
