Mijdrecht offers different points of interest for a stay: Neo-Gothic church architecture and historic traces in the town, as well as routes through polder and lake landscapes. Deciding in advance what to focus on helps you choose between local history, a walking trail that follows a former railway line, and regional landscape routes.

Landscape and Townscape

Mijdrecht lies on higher ground; broad peat excavations give way to lakes. In the old town center, the original settlement axis is visible as a raised ridge. The layout of the town center and the transition from peat excavations to lakes thus stand side by side as distinct aspects of the landscape. The town’s history is also connected to the landscape: Mijdrecht developed during the reclamation of the Ronde Venen.

Bovenlanden Mijdrecht is a designated area within the Utrechtse Venen. The area is accessible from sunrise to sunset; seasonal restrictions apply during the breeding season. If you plan to visit, take these restrictions into account when choosing your dates. In addition to the time of day, the season is a practical factor for this part of your trip.

Church and Historic Traces

The Sint Johannes de Doperkerk is a three-aisled Neo-Gothic pseudo-basilica with a transept and west tower. This specific architectural form offers several features that help identify the church’s style. Some of its color scheme was restored during renovation work in the 1990s.

Other historical points of interest are also spread across the townscape and its monuments. Mijdrecht has nine Rijksmonumenten, or national monuments. The Watertoren in Mijdrecht is one of the best-known Rijksmonumenten in the municipality of De Ronde Venen. Dorpsstraat is also home to ten historic pavement tiles featuring historical photographs and short descriptions. The tile route has been preserved, and the tiles have been renewed. The church, water tower and pavement tiles each offer a different focus: architectural form, a well-known monument and photographic insights into local history.

Walking Trails and Route Landscapes

The Bellopad is a walking trail between Abcoude and Mijdrecht. About half of it follows the former Haarlemmermeer Spoorlijnen railway line. If you want to focus on one section, you can also walk the stretch between Mijdrecht and Gemaal De Ruiter. The former railway line is therefore a defining feature of part of the trail, not the entire route.

The Doortraproute De Ronde Venen – Mijdrecht offers a different route perspective. It runs through the countryside around Mijdrecht and Vinkeveen, along the Kromme Mijdrecht and through a characteristic Dutch polder and lake landscape. A DeelfietsNederland bicycle rental station is located at the edge of the town center; bicycles can be rented via an app. The route description and app-based rental offer different practical points of reference: the landscape and route on the one hand, a local rental option on the other.

Regional Landscapes

Two other routes describe the De Ronde Venen region. The Fortenroute passes through green, water-rich landscapes and over narrow dikes, partly through the Vinkeveense Plassen. The De Ronde Venenroute shows the three phases of peat extraction and passes the Kromme Mijdrecht and the bird-rich Botshol nature reserve. These regional descriptions add landscape and peat-extraction themes to the town’s history without conflating them with the routes through Mijdrecht.

When choosing your stay, you can decide what you want to focus on: Mijdrecht’s architectural and local history, a walking trail associated with the former railway line, or a regional route through water landscapes and landscape history. These topics offer different perspectives on the town and region, without requiring them to form a single set itinerary.
