The meandering river De Kromme Mijdrecht runs alongside the village of De Hoef. There are also hiking and cycling routes of varying lengths, water activities and a history that can be seen in the buildings. If you are looking for a holiday rental in De Hoef, you can tailor your stay to your interests: getting active on a route, taking part in a sporting event, or making time for local history and activities.
Hiking and Cycling Routes for Different Distances
The Kazan-&-Lindenhorst Route is a 12 km circular hiking trail between De Hoef and Nieuwveen. It starts at route point Pondskoekersluis in De Hoef. A longer hiking option is “Langs de Kromme Mijdrecht”: the 18.6 km route follows the winding river for most of its length. This gives you two different options: a circular route between two villages and a longer hike that mostly follows the river.
For a cycling trip, the Jaagpad cycling route is 49.7 km long and can start at TOP Pondskoekersluis near De Hoef. After crossing the Kromme Mijdrecht, the route follows the river again. The two hiking routes and the cycling route therefore differ not only in length but also in type: a circular hike, a longer riverside hike, or a longer cycling route. If you are planning a stay of several days, you can treat these as different excursion options rather than combining them into a single route.
Waterways and Sporting Events
The Kromme Mijdrecht Route is a 20 km canoe trip. An alternative starting point is TOP Pondskoekersluis in De Hoef, Oostzijde 1. There is a car park and a canoe landing stage; check local conditions and the state of the car park and landing stage before setting off. Pondskoekersluis connects the Kerkvaart with De Kromme Mijdrecht. Together with the river that meanders alongside the village, this gives the waterways a direct connection to De Hoef.
De Hoef Sportief’s events also offer a range of sporting activities. These include a 1 km open-water swimming competition in the Kromme Mijdrecht. “41 van de Hoef” is a recreational triathlon consisting of a 1 km swim, a 30 km cycle and a 10 km run. “Hoefs Vlettentrekken” is a rowing competition on the Kromme Mijdrecht, organised by De Hoef Sportief. All De Hoef Sportief activities start at or near De Strooppot, Oostzijde 42–43, 1426 AE De Hoef. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the event dates before making your plans.
Village History and a Place to Eat
A technical monument and a religious monument tell different parts of the village’s history. A diesel pumping station was built in 1914 on the foundations of the former Bloklandse molen and is now a monument. The St. Anthony of Padua Church is listed as a Rijksmonument. Its organ was built in 1829 by W. Beekes for the Roman Catholic Church in Breukelen and moved to De Hoef in 1950. The organ’s history therefore leads from its original destination to De Hoef; the diesel pumping station adds a structure connected with water management to this historical picture.
Another practical detail for planning your visit is Landwinkel De Lindenhorst, which has a farm terrace where buttermilk and freshly baked cheese rolls are served. Alongside the routes and monuments, local food is another reason to visit.
De Hoef as a Destination for Your Stay
Options range from a 12 km circular hike and a longer riverside walk to cycling and canoe routes, as well as sporting events. Other highlights include Pondskoekersluis, the church and its organ history, and the diesel pumping station.
