Amersfoort offers different ways to explore art, urban history and the surrounding landscape. The Koppelpoort and Muurhuizen bring the history of the former city wall to life; the Mondriaanhuis focuses on Piet Mondriaan. The Eem also offers a distinct perspective for discovery. To plan your visit, start by asking yourself whether you are more interested in architectural history, an artist’s life, creative museum activities or a themed tour.
Urban History at the Gate, Houses and Tower
The Koppelpoort is a land and water gate dating from 1400 and was part of Amersfoort’s former city wall. A complete tour through and onto the gate takes about 30 minutes and is led exclusively by a guide from Gilde Amersfoort. If you plan to take this tour, confirm the arrangements before your trip.
The Muurhuizen are houses built from around 1500 along the former city wall, using material from the old wall. The city wall also features at Museum Amersfoort: the museum is housed in three late-medieval wall houses built on the old city wall. The Muurhuizen and the museum buildings thus reflect different architectural connections to the former fortifications.
The Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren is over 98 metres tall and is one of the tallest late-medieval towers. Since 2013, a pair of peregrine falcons has used the tower as a habitat; the falcons are regularly seen there, although their visibility may vary by season. If you are considering a guided tour, check in advance whether one is available on your date.
Mondriaan and the Museums
The Mondriaanhuis is Piet Mondriaan’s birthplace. Visitors can explore his life, iconic work, spiritual influences, interests and friends there. The exhibition ends in a do-it-yourself studio where visitors can create their own artwork. As the exhibition layout may change, it is advisable to check what is currently on offer before your trip.
At Museum Amersfoort, the permanent exhibition “Amorfortia” has taken visitors through centuries of urban history since 17 July 2026. The museum’s Maak Mee Atelier adds a creative activity or workshop to the offering; check the current programme for details. The museums have different focuses: the Mondriaanhuis explores an artist’s life and work, while “Amorfortia” turns the spotlight on the city’s history.
The Eem, Themed Cruises and a Brewery Tour
The “Amersfoortse Pareltjes” route runs through an area on the east bank of the Eem, whose history has been shaped by the river over the centuries. Here, the Eem’s historical significance takes centre stage. Waterlijn’s themed cruises focus on nature, art, culture or special historical sites; the programme may change seasonally.
Another option with a set monthly schedule is a tour of the Rock City brewery, offered in Amersfoort on the first Saturday of every month. The options also differ in how they can be planned: the brewery tour has a monthly date, while Waterlijn’s themed programme may change seasonally. Which perspective shapes your stay depends on whether you would rather focus on a guided brewery tour, a themed cruise, or the city’s historical and artistic sites.
