An 8 km village walk, a neo-Gothic church and regional wine give you concrete reasons to stay in Geesteren. The Veldhoekroute leads through the Twente hedgerow landscape; the church, mill, winegrowing and the facilities at Broekbeke offer a range of themes. You can plan your visit around a walk, architectural heritage, or fishing and regional cuisine.

The Veldhoekroute: eight kilometres through the hedgerow landscape

The Veldhoekroute is designated as a village walk and is 8 km long. This distance helps you plan the walk as a standalone activity and allow time to go at your own pace. The route runs through the Twente hedgerow landscape, making the characteristic landscape as much a focus of the tour as the village itself.

Green arrows help you find your way. You can also download the route via the “Wandelen in Overijssel” app. As signposting and app availability may change, check these options before setting out. The route overview lists Wijngaard “Adebaer” at kilometre 5 as stop 12. If you use this information to plan your route, check it against the latest version of the route.

The church and mill as examples of architectural heritage

The Sint Pancratiuskerk in Geesteren is neo-Gothic and was built together with the rectory in 1925–1926. Neo-Gothic describes a style that revisits Gothic forms. The church and rectory are therefore part of the same building project from the early 20th century; the construction dates give your visit a specific historical context.

Another building is the Grote Geesterse Molen, an octagonal smock mill built in 1867. “Octagonal” describes its eight-sided shape. Compared with the church, the mill’s construction date points to a considerably earlier period. If you are interested in architecture, you can include these two different details about form and date in your exploration without treating the buildings as examples of the same type.

Fishing and cuisine at Broekbeke

Broekbeke has seven fishing ponds. You can catch trout as well as carp, sturgeon and catfish there. Catch-and-release fishing is offered for carp, sturgeon and catfish. This distinction is useful if you are interested in a particular type of fishing or one of the fish species listed.

The facilities also include a brasserie, a conservatory, a terrace and a playground. The kitchen uses fresh, regional ingredients from its own ponds. Fishing and dining are therefore two distinct aspects of what is on offer here. As the activities and facilities described may change, ask about current offerings and participation requirements before visiting.

Winegrowing and regional produce

Wijngaard “Adebaer” grows white Johanniter grapes and red Marechal Foch grapes. Wine made from both varieties is bottled locally and sold under the name “Adebaer”. The details about the route stop and grape varieties offer different kinds of information: one helps you locate the vineyard on the Veldhoekroute, while the other describes which grapes are used to make the wine.

If you would like to taste or buy the wine, check current production beforehand. This makes winegrowing and its product a concrete part of your trip planning without assuming that the wine will be available. Together with the walk and the buildings, it offers a range of interests from which you can choose the focus of your stay in Geesteren.
