In the Dal van de Mosbeek, you can walk across the heath, take a break by springs and streams, and listen to black woodpeckers. The calcium-rich water encourages rare plants such as cuckoo flowers, bog asphodel, orchids, marsh gentian and butterwort.
Protected Nature and Walking Routes
The Dal van de Mosbeek is designated as a protected Natura 2000 site. Manderheide is also part of the European network of natural areas as a Natura 2000 site, due to its importance for biodiversity.
One specific walking option is the 4.7-kilometre Springendal Bronnenroute. It runs alongside babbling streams, clear spring ponds, fields and hay meadows. Winding paths, some with boardwalks, and beech avenues are also part of the route. The trail therefore takes in a variety of landscape features without requiring a longer route.
The Boswachterspad Springendal starts at the Brandtoren car park, Brandtorenweg 4 in Hezingen, and can be reached by car via the N349. The nearest bus stop is De Roezenberg in Vasse; from there, it is a 30-minute walk to the starting point. Check public transport connections again before setting out.
Tubbergen also has a wide range of cycling, walking, mountain biking, horse-riding and carriage-driving routes. This variety makes it easy to start planning by choosing your preferred way to get around.
Mills, an Estate and Glass Art
In Mander, the Watermolen van Frans is a historic overshot watermill. Its features include a pair of millstones driven by water power. The mill building also has an information and exhibition room; access arrangements may vary.
The historic Herinckhave estate, whose layout has been well preserved, is located in Fleringen. The estate comprises a main building, a park, two outbuildings, a watermill, bridges, gates and garden ornaments. These features give an idea of the estate’s varied layout.
The Sint-Pancratius Basilica in Tubbergen has 35 stained-glass windows, created by artists from five generations of the Nicolas family. The basilica is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00. Check the opening hours before your visit.
Glasrijk Tubbergen, an international glass art festival held annually, grew out of the interest in the basilica’s windows. It is considered Europe’s largest open-air glass art festival and attracts around 20,000 visitors each year. Exact dates and the programme vary from year to year.
Local Experiences and Practical Information
De Manderveense Aardbei offers strawberry picking, a drive-in experience and a terrace. Strawberry picking is subject to the season and requires a reservation. The farm shop sells regional products every day, including seasonal strawberries and other fruit, as well as homemade jams, sauces and similar products. The selection varies by season.
A special outdoor spot is the Kroezeboom on the Fleringer Es: the tree, which is several hundred years old, has a small chapel. Outdoor weddings can be held beneath it.
The Infocentrum IJs & Es serves as a starting point for excursions and offers free admission, as well as a car park and toilets. It is open during the opening hours of the adjoining restaurant.
