In Raalte, the Plaskerk combines an early written mention with 15th-century religious ceiling paintings; two walking tours offer further ways to explore the town’s history. Church architecture, theatre, changing artworks and a large outdoor playground each offer a different focus. When planning, consider whether you mainly want to explore architectural and local history, or also take other cultural and leisure activities into account.

Churches and historical dates

The Plaskerk is Raalte’s oldest building and was first mentioned in 1123. The church contains religious ceiling paintings from the 15th century, described as secco paintings. The building’s early written mention and its later artistic decoration therefore represent different periods.

The seasonal schedule lists visits on Wednesdays in July and August from 10 am to 2 pm; group visits are possible by request outside this period. Check the opening times before you arrive.

In the centre of Raalte, the complex of the Basilica of the Holy Cross includes a church built by Alfred Tepe in 1891. The Kruisverheffingkerk was elevated to the status of Basilica Minor in 1992. The construction date and elevation mark separate historical milestones: a church within the complex and the later ecclesiastical status of the Kruisverheffingkerk.

Walking tours through the centre

The “Raalte: Langs kerk en kasteel” route starts and ends at the Plaskerk in the centre. The church is about 700 metres from the railway station. The Plaskerk is therefore a clearly identified reference point for the route and is also located at an approximate distance from the station.

The Historical Centre Route Raalte, by contrast, is a walking tour through the centre that brings the town’s still-visible history to life. Information boards explain historic sights; QR codes link to old photographs and audio excerpts. Both text and visual and audio material accompany the walk.

The two routes differ in their stated focus: for “Raalte: Langs kerk en kasteel”, the start and end points are set at the Plaskerk; the Historical Centre Route combines the walk with information about sights and additional media. This distinction helps you choose whether you prefer a designated starting point or historical interpretation along the walk through the centre.

Culture, art and other activities

The HOFtheater is a medium-sized theatre in Raalte with more than 300 seats. Stöppelhaene was first officially held in 1951. Together, these offer perspectives on Raalte’s culture beyond churches and local history: a theatre with a stated seating capacity and the historical start of an event.

The Openluchtmuseum Molenhof is located in the centre. It consists of four large frames containing artworks that change each year. The specific selection is therefore not the same every year. If you are interested in particular works, check the current selection before your visit.

In Raalte, De Flierefluiter has an outdoor playground covering an area of about six football pitches. This is quite different from church architecture and historical walking tours. The size provides an easy-to-picture guide, while the playground offers a distinct focus for visitors who would like to add another activity to their stay.
