Discover Nieuw-Heeten from two perspectives: follow the Hekk'npad through farmland at the foot of the Sallandse Heuvelrug, or explore traces of local history at the church, cemetery and Processiepad. When planning your trip, you can focus on a walk, architectural history or a local tradition.

The Hekk'npad: a circular walk with a clear limitation

The Hekk'npad is a 6 km village circular walk. It starts in the village center by the church, at the intersection of Zwarteweg and Bathmenseweg, and leads through farmland at the foot of the Sallandse Heuvelrug. It is also important to note a limitation when choosing this walk: it is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Bear this in mind before planning the Hekk'npad as an outing for everyone in your group.

Church, cemetery and historic route

The R.K. St. Joseph's Church in Nieuw-Heeten is a three-aisled Neo-Gothic pseudobasilica. The tower has three storeys and a four-sided spire.

There are about 20 cast-iron crosses from the first half of the 20th century in the cemetery behind St. Joseph's Church. The crosses give the cemetery behind St. Joseph's Church its own historical perspective: as grave markers from the first half of the 20th century, they point to local cemetery culture. Another trace of local history is the Processiepad: it was laid out around 1923 and ran from the Bathemerweg alongside the cemetery to the chapel. Local history thus extends from the building and grave crosses to a historic route with named starting and ending points.

The Processiepad and the Hekk'npad also differ in their layout: the Processiepad is described as a historic route with endpoints, while the Hekk'npad is a village circular walk. This lets you choose between a hike and exploring the area's historical development, rather than treating both routes as the same experience.

Local tradition and public transport

Since 1976, the “Bosweek” has been held in Gerritsenbos for school-age children from 6 to 12 years old. During Bosweek, the children build huts. This has a different focus from church architecture and the history of the routes: it centers on an age group and a specific activity in the forest. If Bosweek is a reason for planning your trip, check the dates in advance.

For public transport, a volunteer-run community bus connects Lettele, Okkenbroek and Nieuw-Heeten with the city of Deventer. If your plans depend on this connection, check the timetable before you travel. This lets you take the bus connection into account as a separate planning point alongside the circular walk and cultural and historical attractions.
