There are several ways to plan a stay in Luttenberg: the De Luttenberg nature reserve borders the village and is part of Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. Other attractions include a walking route, medieval cart tracks, religious history, an agricultural museum and events. The key question is whether you want to focus your stay primarily on the landscape, culture or a specific event.
Walking on and around the Luttenberg
De Luttenberg covers about 50 hectares and reaches 31 metres above NAP at its highest point. The “Rondom de berg” walking route starts in the village and goes over and around the Luttenberg. It passes through woodland and pasture; the changes in elevation offer surprising long-distance views. The route starts at the Elckerlyc community centre, Butzelaarstraat 22, 8105 AR Luttenberg. Elckerlyc is also a TOP tourist transfer point in Overijssel, with ample parking available. There is also an orchard along the route where you can have a picnic. Check the latest information about the route and starting point before setting off.
The historic cart tracks are also part of the Luttenberg landscape: they stretch for 800 metres. Several parallel medieval tracks indicate that the area was heavily used by trading traffic. As well as its scenery, the hill offers a glimpse of historic transport routes.
Religious history and rural life
The Lourdes Grotto was built from 1914 onwards, near a newly laid-out processional path. It was consecrated in September 1915 with a special sermon and designated a national monument in 1999. Another cultural stop is the Sallands Landbouwmuseum De Laarman. It is housed in a former livestock feed factory, much of whose equipment has been preserved. Spread over four floors, the museum displays objects from rural life around 50 to 100 years ago. The grotto reflects the area’s religious history, while De Laarman focuses on rural everyday culture and the former factory site.
Visitors are welcomed at the Dijkman Klompenatelier in Luttenberg, where demonstrations are also offered. Amfitheater Het Lommerrijk is a woodland theatre behind the village church. Together with the museum and grotto, these places round out the range of things to plan for a stay in Luttenberg. Check what is available at each place before visiting; no particular access or event date is guaranteed.
Planning events and getting there
Luttenbergs Feest is an annual event that usually takes place in August. It includes the NK Gatgraven competition and the traditional Zwientie Tikken event. The exact date and programme may vary, so check the latest event information before your trip. This makes it easier to plan a stay around the festival dates than a trip focused mainly on walking or cultural attractions.
Access to Sallands Landbouwmuseum De Laarman by BĂĽrgerbus route 518 is limited; a ten-minute walk is required afterwards. Check the timetable before travelling. This way, you can base your accommodation plans on the activities you actually intend to do.
