Sibculo offers different ways to spend your stay: the “Four Eras” walk passes through several periods, while the monastery remains, garden and museum explore the history of the former Cistercian monastery of Groot Galilea. If you are looking for accommodation, you can start by asking yourself whether you would rather focus on a walking route or on the town’s cultural history.

A walk through four eras

The “Four Eras” route is a walk of less than three kilometres. It takes you through the Ice Age, the Middle Ages, the 20th century and the present day. Its sweep across time makes it a focus in its own right for anyone who wants to combine a short walk with a historical theme. Allow time for the walk according to your own pace; the route is described by its length, not by a fixed duration.

Monastery history and the Kloostertuin

At Grachtstraat/Kloosterstraat, a listed monument includes the remains of a 15th-century Cistercian monastery. Groot Galilea Monastery was founded at the monastery site in Sibculo in 1406. Together, the founding year and the structural remains give the monastery’s history a concrete timeframe. The site is therefore a thematic point of reference if you are interested in medieval history and Cistercian heritage.

The Kloostertuin was created in 2016 on the site of the medieval cloister garden. Its five beds each have a different focus: one is devoted to medicinal herbs, while the other four relate to the Bible, the Cistercians, the monks of Sibculo and Mary. This layout also makes the garden’s themes easy to understand: medicinal herbs sit alongside religious and monastic-history references. It offers a different way to explore the monastery’s history than the monastery remains themselves.

Zichtbaar Verleden Museum

The Zichtbaar Verleden Museum presents the history of Sibculo’s former Cistercian monastery. On display are archaeological finds from the 1928 excavations at the former monastery site. The museum also displays geological rock from Sibculo’s sand excavations. This adds both archaeological evidence and a geological perspective on the area to the monastery’s history. The museum is at Kloosterdijk 178b in Sibculo.

The options have clearly distinct focuses: “Four Eras” is a walk spanning different periods, while the monument, Kloostertuin and museum offer different ways to explore the monastery’s history. The museum also features archaeological finds and rock from the sand excavations. If you choose your hotel based on your interests, you can decide in advance whether you want to focus mainly on a short walk or on several cultural-history themes.

Getting around by bike or bus

The official cycling route between Kloosterhaar and Sibculo follows Dorpsstraat/N341 and Kloosterstraat/N341 to Kloosterdijk. It ends near the edge of Sibculo. As conditions for cyclists may change, check the route before setting out.

Bus route 80 between Almelo and Hoogeveen stops a two-minute walk from the Zichtbaar Verleden Museum. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable before setting out.
