Ane offers a range of local themes: the Anermolen as a visitor windmill, the Battle of Ane and rural architecture. The historical details point to a dated site and different forms of remembrance; the mill is distinguished by its special milling purpose. This lets you choose the focus of your trip: history, technology or landscape.

The Battle of Ane: site and remembrance

At the beginning of the 13th century, the Mommeriete northeast of the hamlet of Ane was a marshland. The Battle of Ane took place there on 28 July 1227. The forces from Drenthe were victorious; the bishop and his brother were killed in the battle. The site and the date answer two different questions: the Mommeriete places the event geographically, while 28 July 1227 places it in time. The monument to the battle stands in Ane on Anerveenseweg. The Infocentrum Vechtdal in Gramsbergen has an exhibition about the battle. Check the Infocentrum's current opening hours before travelling if you would like to visit the exhibition.

A report published in 2025 states that the association “Herdenking Slag bij Ane” holds an annual commemorative event on 16 August. This date should be distinguished from 28 July, when the battle took place in 1227. If you would like to plan around the commemorative event, check in advance whether it is taking place.

The cycle route to the battle site

The “Jochem en de Slag bij Ane” cycle route takes visitors to the place where the battle was fought. It offers a way to experience the historical site by following a route; the monument and exhibition are other points of access for learning about the event. The route booklet is available at Museum Gramsbergen. Check availability before your trip if you need the booklet for planning.

The Anermolen and its milling purpose

The Anermolen is a visitor windmill that mills for a chicken farmer rather than a baker. It is about 15 metres tall. This separates two distinct features: the height describes the structure, while the milling purpose describes its function. This unusual purpose sets the mill apart from the historical account of the battle.

Landscape, farmsteads and local flavours

Ane's esch and farmstead landscape is associated with typical hall-type farmhouses. This architectural style offers a distinct perspective on the area's rural character and adds an architectural theme to the history of the battle. Those interested in cultural landscapes can look beyond the historical event to the relationship between farm architecture and landscape.

Ane or Hardenberg's Bakkerij Slatman is also associated with original Saxon spiced cakes, also known as “Slatmanskoek”. The family business has been known for handcrafted products since 1893. If you are specifically looking for this speciality, check availability in advance.
