Gramsbergen lies on the Vecht, as well as on the Zwolle–Emmen railway line and the Almelo–De Haandrik Canal. Artworks in several locations, an Allied war cemetery, local visitor information and activities on the river or by bike give a stay here a variety of different focal points. For planning purposes, it helps to consider these options as separate highlights: art and history come to life through specific works and places, while the Vechtezomp boat trip and cycling options are distinct offerings.

Art in the townscape and along the Vecht

The public bronze artwork “Pieterpad” stands by the church in the centre of Gramsbergen. The public neon artwork “Leonardo - Gerrit Toon” can be seen on the station façade; “Verzameling Retour” is also open to the public at the NS railway station. The public artwork “Koekoeklokgewicht” is located at the edge of the pond. You will encounter art in several named locations: by the church, at the station and by the pond.

Cai Guo-Qiang’s artwork “Skylight” is in the Gramsberger Bosje. It consists of several metal dragons suspended high in the trees and was installed in 1999 as part of a 150-kilometre-long art route along the Vecht. At “Hello Sailor!”, the view from the top of the artwork extends across the Vecht. Their connections to the river differ: “Skylight” is part of a long art route along the Vecht, while “Hello Sailor!” focuses on the view over the river.

Town history and remembrance

The Historisch Cultureel Info Centrum Vechtdal is located in the old town centre of Gramsbergen. The Info Centrum Vechtdal offers a wide selection of cycling, walking and driving routes. A church and residential houses can be seen along Kruisstraat and Voorstraat. These specific local features complement the individual artworks with impressions of the streetscape.

Groups of ten or more can book a guided town tour from the Cultuur Historisch Museum. Arrange the details before your trip. A guided tour is therefore an option for groups, while the routes on offer cover cycling, walking and driving as different ways to explore.

The Allied war cemetery is located in the general cemetery on De Anerdijk. It is the resting place of ten fallen soldiers. Each grave is marked with an identical white natural-stone grave marker bearing a relief emblem and a cross. The repeated design gives this place of remembrance a clear, uniform appearance.

Trips on the Vecht and cycling routes

The Vechtezomp offers public and group trips on the Vecht across the border. It travels from its starting point in Gramsbergen to Laar. Along the way, the guides tell visitors about the history of the Vechtezomp and the Vecht River. If you are planning a trip, arrange the dates in advance.

Information on different route lengths is available to help you choose a route. The “Eng' Land om Gramsbergen” route is offered in variants of approximately 22, 32, 47 and 57 kilometres. In addition, 14 cycling routes ranging from 20 to 35 kilometres have been laid out from Gramsbergen. The figures show two different ranges: the variants of the named route go up to approximately 57 kilometres, while the 14 cycling routes are stated to range from 20 to 35 kilometres. You can use these distances as a guide without combining the individual options into a single tour.
