Halfweg combines a still-operational paddle-wheel steam pumping station with a rich transport and industrial history. The former trekschuit service and the first steam train in the Netherlands represent different chapters; there is also a walking path across bridges, a named route, and a cheese tasting. You can choose whether to focus your stay on technical and industrial heritage, a walk, a train journey, or a culinary stop.
Steam Pumping Station and Sugar Factory History
Stoomgemaal Halfweg is the oldest and largest still-operational paddle-wheel steam pumping station in the world. As a museum, it represents the technical side of the town’s history. An area of 110,000 m² on the former CSM sugar factory site is being given a new purpose. An important principle of the area’s development is the preservation and restoration of valuable existing industrial buildings. The pumping station embodies the continued operation of a technical facility; the focus at the sugar factory site is on new uses and the treatment of existing industrial buildings.
From Trekschuit to Railway
The construction of the Haarlemmertrekvaart in 1632 made it possible to travel between Amsterdam and Haarlem by trekschuit, a boat pulled along a towpath. In Halfweg, important sea locks prevented the canal from continuing all the way through. Travellers therefore had to transfer from one trekschuit to another. This interruption made Halfweg a transfer point on the historic water route.
Another dated chapter followed in 1839: the Netherlands’ first steam train travelled past Halfweg station on the route between Amsterdam and Haarlem. Halfweg’s oldest houses stand in and around IJsteeg, adding a local connection to the older built environment to the town’s transport and industrial history.
Walking Paths and Bridges
During the 2020 renovation of the N200 and the Boezembruggen bridges, more green spaces and a walking path across the bridges were created. The blue Zwanenburg route passes through Halfweg and Zwanenburg. For planning, the two details offer different points of reference: the path created in 2020 specifically crosses the bridges, while the named route passes through both towns.
Getting Here and Getting Around
A Sprinter train between Haarlem and Amsterdam Centraal stops at Halfweg-Zwanenburg station four times an hour. Check the timetable for your travel date, as schedules can change. A pedestrian bridge connects Halfweg-Zwanenburg station with SugarCity.
Stoomgemaal Halfweg Museum is a five-minute walk from both Halfweg-Zwanenburg NS railway station and the Connexxion bus stop at the station. The five-minute walk refers to the route to the museum; the pedestrian bridge is the connection to SugarCity. You can therefore treat the train journey, museum visit, and route to SugarCity as separate points of reference.
A Culinary Touch of Cheese
Cheese & More by Henri Willig at Amsterdam The Style Outlets offers Dutch cheese gifts and invites you to sample Henri Willig cheese. This adds a specific tasting experience to the historical and walking-focused themes. If you plan to visit, check the shop’s latest information.
