Straight fields, long straight roads and canals shape Haarlemmermeer’s open landscape. At the same time, museums, historic waterworks and parts of the Defence Line of Amsterdam tell the story of the long struggle against water. Here, you can encounter both expansive landscapes and tangible reminders of their history.
World Heritage and Routes Through the Landscape
The Defence Line of Amsterdam in Haarlemmermeer is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The entire defensive line stretches for 149 kilometres and includes 45 forts. The Geniedijk runs through Hoofddorp as a popular cycling and walking route, connecting neighbouring districts and recreational areas. It also serves as an ecological corridor for various plants, birds and small mammals. Butterflies and bats, among others, use the Geniedijk as a migration route.
Another way to experience nature and history by bike is the 42.0-kilometre Erfgoedroute through the north of Haarlemmermeer. Along the way, the route passes nature and historic sights. If you plan to follow it, check the current route before setting off.
Machinery and the History of Water Management
Gemaal De Cruquius is a national monument dating from 1849 and houses the world’s largest steam engine. The Cruquius Museum explores the centuries-long struggle against water. An audio tour is also available in English; check the museum’s latest information when planning your visit.
Stoomgemaal Halfweg also focuses on technology: the museum features an exhibition, model and industrial steam engines, an engine room and paddle wheels that visitors can view. Opening days vary. The museum is a five-minute walk from NS Halfweg-Zwanenburg station and the Connexxion bus stop there. Check the current timetable before travelling.
Art on Historic Fort Islands
Kunstfort Vijfhuizen is part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. The entire fort island is used for exhibitions, and installations and artworks rotate in the outdoor areas. Art, cultural heritage and nature come together here on a fort island.
The fort island of Fort van Hoofddorp is open to the public and brings together culture and nature. Cultural activities include performances in the open-air theatre and exhibitions in the former rooms and casemate. Performances and exhibitions change, so check the current programme if you are planning a specific visit.
Nature Areas and Outdoor Activities
Near Hoofddorp lies Haarlemmermeerse Bos, a 115-hectare nature and recreational area. A three-kilometre tree trail and a 1.5-kilometre insect trail explore different nature themes. There is a swimming area at Zuidstrand, and the recreational lake offers opportunities for stand-up paddleboarding. Check water conditions and warnings before your visit.
Venneperhout, a young and varied polder woodland, lies on the edge of Nieuw-Vennep. One striking old feature there is 500 El Boom. Most paths are paved, making the park easily accessible for wheelchair users; path conditions may change. With a little luck, you may spot partridges, foxes, kestrels or hobby falcons—but sightings are not guaranteed.
Orchards and a Park in Development
Landgoed De Olmenhorst covers 31 hectares and features organic apple and pear orchards, listed buildings and lush gardens. The estate is open daily from sunrise to sunset; check the latest access information before your visit. The seasonal pick-your-own is open to everyone and lets you pick fruit in the orchard. Dates and conditions may change. For BSO groups and schools, the guided pick-your-own includes a tour of the orchard, fruit picking and information about fruit growing and nature.
PARK21 is a 1,000-hectare recreational park between Hoofddorp and Nieuw-Vennep in Haarlemmermeer and is under development. The area offers space for sports, relaxation, agriculture, education and plenty of greenery. Walking trails, cycling routes and horse-riding trails run through the park. Check the latest information on routes and access before your visit, as PARK21 is still being developed.
