The Strabrechtse Heide gives Someren a distinctive natural landscape: it covers about 1,500 hectares and was designated a Natura 2000 site in 2006, together with part of the Kleine Dommel valley. Landscape management is also part of its history. A flock of Kempische heath sheep, mowing and sod-cutting help reduce the spread of grass across the heath.
Trails through heathland and cultural landscapes
For a shorter walk, the Allemanspad offers a 3-kilometre and a 5-kilometre option. Both start at the Natuurpoort Vennenhorst car park; the path is fully paved and particularly suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Surface conditions may vary, and the route may change locally.
The Beuvenroute also offers two distances: a short 5-kilometre option and a long 10-kilometre option. It starts on the edge of Lierop, in the hamlet of Moorsel. If you are interested in historic places, signed Monumentenroute 1 is a 25-kilometre route to monuments and places of interest in Someren-Dorp and Lierop. It starts at Wilhelminaplein in the centre of Someren. The 30-kilometre Strabrechtse Heide cycling route offers a different perspective, taking you through the heathland and its surroundings.
The Kennedymars sets a much longer pace: this 80-kilometre march passes through Someren and the surrounding area and takes place every year on the first full weekend in July. The exact route may change. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the latest event dates and route details.
History and architecture in Someren and Lierop
In Lierop, the Koepelkerk H. Naam Jezus combines architectural history with listed status: the church was built in 1892 in the Neo-Romanesque style and has been a Rijksmonument since 1976. The hamlet of Boomen also tells the story of the development of the cultural landscape. It is a protected village setting and is considered a typical example of a hamlet of arable fields or farmyards; it includes five farmhouses classified as Rijksmonumenten.
Another chapter of history dates back to the war years. The Dennenlust hiding camp was established in 1943 to provide accommodation for students from The Hague who were being sought by German authorities during the Second World War. The former camp has been reconstructed in the Moorsel area of Lierop. In the region, buildings and landscape features sit alongside places whose history is connected with specific events.
In Someren, Molen Den Evert is a semi-open post mill. Its museum displays objects and tools related to mills. In the meadow behind the mill, you can see wild bees, butterflies, wildflowers, plants and old varieties of grain, among other things. The meadow adds a glimpse of natural diversity and historic crops to your visit; its layout may change with land management.
Leisure and local life
The family-friendly De Diepsteeckel outdoor swimming pool in Someren has a paddling pool and a slide in the leisure pool. As availability is seasonal, check whether the pool will be open during your travel dates before visiting.
Speeltuin Prinses Irene includes a small animal park with alpacas, rabbits, dwarf goats and deer; the animals on view may vary. The venue can be booked for children’s parties, school trips, family days and neighbourhood celebrations. There is ample parking at and around the playground in Someren-Eind. As booking and parking arrangements may change, it is a good idea to check in advance.
The local market is also part of everyday life: on Wednesdays in even-numbered calendar weeks, it takes place from 9 a.m. to noon at Wilhelminaplein, in front of the town hall. The schedule may change, so check it before your trip. The Toeristisch Informatiepunt Someren provides free maps for cycling, walking and mountain biking routes, and information about events, activities and leisure options. These service details may also change.
