Roosendaal combines cultural themed routes with a variety of cycling and countryside experiences. On a bike, you can explore local history; at Tongerlohuys, the Verhalenbank preserves personal memories of Roosendaal. For days in nature, there are walking, cycling, mountain biking and horse-riding routes through Landgoed Visdonk, among others. If you are looking for accommodation, it helps to decide first which activities you plan to focus on and how you will travel.

Cycling between themed routes and sports facilities

A network of numbered junctions lets you plan your own cycling routes. Cultural cycling routes offer a different focus: they cover peat extraction, smuggling history, the Catholic past and the history of the church villages of Wouw. This lets you combine a bike ride with themes from local history, without every route having the same focus.

Roosendaalse WielerExperience brings together a paved cycling track, a challenging mountain bike course, a dirt-jump track and a 3,500-square-metre pump track, described as the largest in Europe. This sets it apart from a ride through the surrounding area: the focus here is on different types of cycling and riding at one facility. Which option suits your plans depends on whether you want to plan your own route or use the facilities listed here.

Countryside and trails around Visdonk

Natuurpoort Visdonk is a starting point for walking, cycling, mountain biking and horse-riding routes through Landgoed Visdonk. The estate brings together historic avenues, old hedgerows, forests, heathland and the Rozenven. For a specific choice of route, the Drevenroute offers a clear option: it is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchair users. This information applies to this route.

The woodland of Wouwse Plantage also features different forest types and covers around 900 hectares. It is an important breeding area for the European honey buzzard and black woodpecker. The 13.5-kilometre-long, low-lying watercourse De Zoom flows past Wouwse Plantage and is also known as Spillebeek. It was once used to transport peat to the port of Bergen op Zoom. The landscape therefore offers both opportunities to observe nature and traces of its former use.

Cultural sites and history

At Vesting Kasteel van Wouw, four-metre-high earth ramparts trace the outline of the former castle complex. A modern access bridge leads to the former castle grounds, where part of the old castle has been restored and re-incorporated. The oldest section belongs to the old castle, built between 1250 and 1300. Wouw is also home to the large Lambertuskerk, a late Gothic church dating from the early 16th century.

Another local story takes you to Wouwse Plantage: in 1870, a church was built near the estate and brickworks of P. J. Baron de Caters. It formed the centre of the new Pindorp, later called Wouwse Plantage. In Roosendaal, Tongerlohuys preserves personal memories in the Verhalenbank. The Historische Collectie Korps Commandotroepen presents the history of the commandos during their international deployments.

The Brandweermuseum in Wouwse Plantage displays seven historic fire engines and other exhibits used to put out fires. A visit can be arranged by appointment through VVV Roosendaal; confirm the appointment before travelling. The Roosendaalse bierwandeling explores the history of beer brewing, particularly around the old market. At special beer cafés, you can sample beer with guidance from a beer expert. Check booking details and participating cafés in advance. Molen De Arend dates from 1811 and was rebuilt after a fire in 1825; free guided tours are offered there. Arrange your visit in advance, as visiting arrangements may change.

Planning your journey and accommodation

If you arrive by train at Roosendaal station, the centre is about a ten-minute walk away. Alternatively, you can take the bus or use an OV-fiets rental bike. Local bus arrangements may change, so check the latest travel information before setting off. Roosendaal is accessible by car via the A17 or A58.

Your choice of where to stay can therefore be guided by the plans that are actually a priority for your trip.
