A memorial to seven crew members, a protected village landscape and a variety of routes give Lierop several clear reasons to visit. You can choose the village for its history, heathland and rural paths, or as a base for cycling activities.
History and village landscape
The Lancaster Monument commemorates the seven crew members who lost their lives when a British bomber crashed in the village on 25 May 1944. In the hamlet of Moorsel, the Dennenlust refuge camp was established in 1943 to provide shelter during the Second World War to students from The Hague who were being sought by the Germans. These two historical themes highlight different aspects: remembrance of the crash and the story of a place intended to shelter students.
Boomen is a hamlet. In March 1996, Boomen was designated a protected village landscape and is considered a typical example of the development of a farming village with fields. Five farms are designated as national heritage monuments. Lierop thus highlights both the development of a distinctive village structure and the remembrance of individual events.
Choosing heathland and routes
Lierop borders the Strabrechtse Heide directly. You can also explore the wooded Lieropsche Heide from Lierop. For planning a nature outing, these offer two distinct options: the immediate proximity of the Strabrechtse Heide and the chance to explore the wooded Lieropsche Heide.
Landelijk Lierop runs through the village and its rural surroundings. The route follows easy-to-walk paths and roads through hamlets and small nature areas. The Beuvenroute starts on the edge of Lierop, in the hamlet of Moorsel.
The signposted Monumentenroute 1 is 25 km long and passes a wealth of historic monuments and sights in Someren-Dorp and Lierop. One practical feature: you can explore the first nine sites on foot before continuing the cycling tour. This means you can plan the route with a walking section first, followed by cycling. Check the signs and route details before setting out.
For mountain-biking enthusiasts, the Mountainbikeroute Lierop offers a different kind of route: it combines singletrack and loose-sand paths with varied landscapes of woodland, heathland and marshes. You can take the information about the trails and sandy surfaces into account when choosing a route; the stated landscape types also shape the described course.
Creative activities and festival
At the Lux et Terra site, beginners and experienced participants can sculpt under the guidance of Luciën van den Eerden. This is a different focus from visiting historic monuments or following a route: here, the emphasis is on a guided creative activity. Check access for your chosen date in advance.
The Nirwana youth centre has been organizing the three-day Nirwana Tuinfeest festival for more than 50 years. If you want to plan your stay around it, check the specific festival dates before travelling.
