Hoeven combines a polder landscape with historic architecture and several different reasons to visit. In the Hoevense Beemden, cycling, walking and wintering geese take centre stage; Bovendonk offers a glimpse into the history of a former seminary. Other attractions include Pagnevaartbos, the Van Gogh cycling route Etten-Leur South, which passes through Hoeven, and Waterspeelpark Splesj. This makes it possible to focus on different things during a stay: nature, history, cycling or water play.
Polder Landscape and Winter Birds
The Hoevense Beemden are a polder landscape between Hoeven and Oudenbosch to the south and the Mark to the north. Cycling is popular in the Beemden, and walking is possible in several areas. This gives visitors two specific ways to explore: cycling, which is common in the area, and walks in various locations. Large numbers of greylag geese and greater white-fronted geese winter there. This also gives the nature theme a clear seasonal aspect.
Bovendonk and Its History
Bovendonk is a monumental site in Hoeven, with a history dating back to 1282. Long corridors, stained-glass windows, a chapel and a courtyard bring the history of the former seminary to life. The site’s historical significance is made tangible through specific features of the building, not just a date. Bovendonk offers guided tours throughout the year on request for groups of ten or more. This way of visiting differs from the nature and cycling options: tours require both a prior request and a minimum group size.
Pagnevaartbos: Nature Area with a Peat Canal
Pagnevaartbos also offers a connection with nature, but with an additional historical dimension. This nature area, covering approximately 35 hectares, lies between Oudenbosch, Hoeven and Bosschenhoofd. The Pagnevaart, an old peat canal once used to transport peat towards Breda and Dordrecht, runs through the forest. For travellers interested not only in the landscape but also in its former use, the canal is a tangible point of reference. This historical thread sets the area apart from the wintering geese and activities in the Hoevense Beemden.
Water Play and Cycling Route
Another kind of attraction is Waterspeelpark Splesj in Hoeven. It is the largest outdoor water play park in the Benelux and has seven water slides. When planning a cycling trip, it is useful to distinguish between two options: the Van Gogh cycling route Etten-Leur South passes through Hoeven, while cycling is popular in the Hoevense Beemden. The route is a named trail through the town, whereas the Beemden are described as an area where cycling is common.
Another regional point of reference is Jachthaven ’t Lamgat, which is part of West Brabant’s cycling and walking junction network. This offers a different kind of orientation from the Van Gogh route: one is linked to the regional junction network, while the other follows a specific cycling route.
Getting to Bovendonk
Bovendonk is accessible via the A58 and A17. It is about a three-minute walk from the Hofstraat bus stop. For directions to this historic site, visitors can use both the named roads and the specific bus stop as points of reference.
