Religious Heritage and Art in Oudenbosch

The Oudenbosch Arboretum also brings together garden history and botanical diversity. The former monastery garden, covering about four hectares, is part of Oudenbosch’s religious cultural heritage and is home to an extensive collection of the genus Aesculus. The garden’s former use and its present-day plant collection thus stand side by side as different facets of the same place.

The collection at the Oudenbosch Museum of Natural History and Ethnology ranges from nature and geology to ethnography and archaeology. Its four sections offer different thematic perspectives: from natural history and human ways of life to traces of the past. Those interested in the municipality’s cultural side will find a different focus here than in its religious buildings or arboretum.

Since December 2025, KunstHalderberge has added to the offerings in central Oudenbosch with changing exhibitions, art projects, and workshops or courses. The program and opening hours may change. There is also a walking tour from Oudenbosch for a guided look at the cultural and religious heritage. It takes 1 to 1.5 hours and explores these themes. The tour format and duration may vary seasonally.

In Oud Gastel, different building histories can be distinguished by their specific dates. The church tower of Laurentiuskerk dates from the 15th century, while the nave was rebuilt in 1906. The Mastboomhuis in the same village was built in 1874 on behalf of Petrus Mastboom. These dates point to different periods and building histories, rather than telling a single historical timeline.

Landscape and Activities

Het Gastels Laag is a nature area in the municipality of Halderberge. It lies southwest of the built-up area of Oudenbosch, in the municipality of Halderberge, and covers 23 hectares of species-rich grassland, blue moor-grassland and old alder carr woodland. Initially, 180 flower and plant species were counted there, including rare species on the Red List. The three habitats mentioned and the plant survey give the area different ecological facets.

Those wishing to explore Halderberge by bike can plan their own routes using the extensive cycling junction network. The routes pass through forests, along rivers and across atmospheric village squares. As the network and signage may be updated, check the current route before setting out on a specific ride.

Activities in Hoeven and Bosschenhoofd also offer different experiences. Waterspeelpark Splesj in Hoeven has a 900 m² spray park and seven water slides. In August 2026, Maple Farm Adventures in Bosschenhoofd offered a climbing park, an outdoor playground and an adventure golf course. If you are planning a visit at a later date, check which activities will be available then.

Another option is Skydive ENPC, which offers parachute jumps from an airfield in Bosschenhoofd. Both the ascent and the subsequent landing take place there; jumps are weather-dependent. The experiences described thus range from water-based and play activities to a weather-dependent parachute jump.
