Venlo can be discovered in many different ways: QR-code-guided insights into historic buildings, archaeological and modern art in museums, poetry and dialect art in the urban landscape, and paths through a landscape shaped by mineral extraction. When looking for a hotel in Venlo, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: culture, walking and cycling, or a specific outdoor activity.
Art and History in Museums
The Erfgoud Route uses short films and QR codes to offer glimpses behind facades and access to historic cellars and attics. It also draws attention to selected interiors. Individual QR-code content may change over time, so check the latest information before setting off.
At the Limburgs Museum, the permanent exhibition “From Neanderthal man to city-dweller” presents archaeological treasures and an interactive journey through different eras. For orientation: the museum is directly opposite the NS railway station and bus station in Venlo.
Museum van Bommel van Dam offers a different focus. It was Limburg’s first museum of modern art and features changing exhibitions of painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. It is housed in a former post office; its monumental gold-colored facade was inspired by envelopes. The Duikbril window offers a striking view of Venlo and does not require an admission ticket.
Poetry, Dialect Art and Historic Places
The Poetry Route is a cultural walk through the historic city center. Poems can be found on facades, walls and buildings. Floddergats, the historic Keizerstraat, offers a different way to experience the urban landscape and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Along Floddergats, you’ll find works of art by Ger Janssen, which humorously depict characters and dialect songs in the Venlo dialect.
The Dominicanenkerk also combines historical significance with present-day use: it was a Dominican monastery chapel and has been used for weddings, celebrations, concerts and other events since 2007.
Countryside and Outdoor Activities
The landscape of Jammerdal was largely shaped by the extraction of clay and gravel. De Groote Heide preserves traces of an important airport from the Second World War era, along with restored historic fortifications. The area is also suitable for walking and cycling. Here, landscape history meets outdoor activity.
The De Groote Heide Information Centre has ample parking and provides information about recreational activities and nature. It is also a good starting point for hikes or bike rides through the nature reserve. As operational details may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
For cyclists, the Maaspaden Route Venlo offers a clearly defined distance: it is 26 kilometers long and starts at Wilhelminapark in Venlo. At De Groote Heide, you can choose between walks and bike rides in a landscape area. Consider whether you prefer a route with a set distance and named starting point or a range of activities in the countryside.
If you’re looking for a ropes course rather than a route, Fun Forest Venlo offers nine courses at heights of 4 to 15 meters, with zip lines, bridges and a free jump. Each destination has its own focus, from art and urban history to countryside, cycling and ropes courses.
