In Velden, village traditions and architectural history meet opportunities for cycling and walking. A custom associated with the Gildefeest, historic buildings, and varied landscapes offer several themes to explore during your stay. You can plan your outings around your interests, whether that is local life, the history of the area, or outdoor routes.

Village Traditions in Velden

Gekke Maondaag is a tradition in Velden. The custom includes a procession of young unmarried men—formerly farmhands—from Schandelo and the other districts to the village cafés, one week after the Gildefeest. Today, people of all ages still turn out in large numbers to celebrate the day. The tradition thus links a long-established form of village life with an event that is still celebrated today. Event arrangements may change; check the latest schedule before travelling.

Schutterij Sint Andreas also plays a part in Velden’s events. The association organises shooting competitions, parades, festive events, and community projects. Spectators are welcome at its events. If you would like to attend a specific event, check its date in advance.

Architectural History and the Village Pump

The Sint-Andreaskerk has two Baroque side altars dating from the 18th century. Another historic building is the Hovenshof, also known as Hovershof: this listed farmhouse is in the hamlet of Hasselt in the village of Velden and dates from 1778. The side altars and the farmhouse represent different aspects of local history: ecclesiastical furnishings on the one hand, and historic rural architecture on the other.

The village pump has a history of its own. On 4 October 2009, it was returned to its original site and installed there as a monument. The restored pump dispenses water again and is the municipality of Venlo’s first public drinking-water point. If you are relying on it for water, check on site whether the pump is dispensing water during your visit.

Cycling and Walking Routes, Landscapes and History

The Gekke-Maondaag walking route connects five statues in the outskirts and hamlets of Velden. Each statue can serve as a possible starting point. If you prefer cycling, the Fossa Eugeniana cycle route is another option: it passes through the Velden district of Venlo. The historic Fossa Eugeniana is also associated with a chapter of its own in history. Construction began in 1626; the plan was to connect the Rhine, Maas, and Scheldt rivers.

The nearby Zwart Water nature reserve is also worth exploring on foot or by bike. It encompasses a large, former meander of the Maas, with remnants of heathland and dry and wet grassland. There are several signposted short and long walks in the area; the cycle network passes directly through the reserve along the Venkoelen. East of Velden, on the German border, lies Vreewater, a small-scale, semi-open landscape. These varied landscapes complement the routes in and around Velden, and there is no need to combine them into a single tour.

Practical Information

Parking for the Schandelo route is available at the market square in Velden. As practical information may change, check locally before you travel. When planning, it is also helpful to distinguish between specific event dates, the walking and cycling options described here, and the different landscape features in each area.
