More than 15 gardens surrounding a 17th-century castle make a striking introduction to Kasteeltuinen Arcen. There is also architectural history, brewing culture, regional produce and opportunities to relax.

Gardens and Castle

Kasteeltuinen Arcen comprises more than 15 unique gardens laid out around a historic estate with a 17th-century castle. The Rosarium features ten themed rose gardens, with hundreds of different varieties of roses. One special feature is the Berceau: visitors can climb it and take in the entire rose garden from a viewing point.

Kasteel Arcen is also part of the garden experience and is open to garden visitors. It may be temporarily closed during events, so check the current conditions before your visit. The gardens and castle offer a close-up look at the layout of the grounds and at a building whose history goes back further.

Traces of Local and Architectural History

The present-day Kasteel Arcen was built in the mid-17th century on the orders of the Dukes of Gelre, on the remains of an earlier castle. The Schanstoren points to a different era: it is a remnant of Arcen’s 15th-century fortifications and has been a national monument since 1969. Together, the two buildings reveal different chapters of history, from the earlier fortifications to the later castle.

The Wijmarsche Watermolen was built in 1677 on the orders of Baron Von Wymar-Kirchberg, the lord of Arcen Castle. Following its restoration, it has been operating again as part of the Graanbranderij since 1993. Alcohol is distilled there by hand from beer and wine.

Brewery Tours and Regional Produce

The history of the Hertog Jan brewery began in 1915, when four brewer friends joined forces to establish a modern steam brewery. On a guided tour, visitors can follow the entire brewing process accompanied by an experienced guide. The tour passes through narrow, low-ceilinged passages and includes 144 steps. Take these specific conditions into account when planning and check the booking details before your trip.

Regional products such as asparagus liqueur, blueberry liqueur, fruit juice liqueur and mustard are the focus at Graanbranderij De IJsvogel. It also organizes walks, liqueur-making workshops and tastings. Check the current dates in advance. Of the two food and drink experiences, the Hertog Jan tour takes you through the complete brewing process, while De IJsvogel offers a range of activities centered on making liqueurs and regional products.

Relaxation, Nature and a Link to Lottum

Thermaalbad Arcen offers Kneipp baths, saunas and relaxation rooms; check current operating details before your trip. The thermal mineral water at Thermaalbad Arcen has a temperature of 35 to 36 degrees Celsius and comes from a spring 892 metres deep. Alongside gardens and history, there are also specific wellness options to choose from.

Barbara’s Weerd offers a different view of the landscape: its flowering floodplains have rich flora and fauna that thrive thanks to regular flooding by the Maas. A seasonal ferry connects Arcen with the rose village of Lottum. If you want to use this connection, check the current operating days and conditions in advance.

Whether castle gardens, historic buildings, brewing history, regional produce or relaxation is what appeals most, these different highlights can help you choose Arcen as a destination that suits your interests.
