Panningen offers several ways to explore its history: the parish church and a monastery chapel in the centre, the Odilia Chapel on the edge of the built-up area, and the former ring oven complex. There are also cultural offerings, a weekly market and routes with different themes. When planning your visit, you can choose between architectural and industrial history, events and routes through the surrounding countryside.
Churches and monastery chapel
The parish church Onze Lieve Vrouw van Zeven Smarten stands on a narrow, elongated plot between Kerkstraat and Pastoor Huijbenplein in the old centre of Panningen. It was built in 1930 by H.W. Valk in collaboration with the parish priest and building supervisor J.H. Huijben. The town’s pilgrimage tradition goes back further: it began with the construction of a pilgrimage chapel in 1638 and attracted pilgrims from the wider area.
The Kloosterkapel, with its adjoining sacristy and former burial chapel, is also part of a monastery complex in the centre. The chapel was built in 1907 and consecrated on 28 April 1908. One of its distinctive features is a neo-Gothic organ dating from 1912. It comes from the Paris workshop of A. Cavaillé-Coll and Ch. Mutin and is rare in the Netherlands. Its construction history and organ add a distinct dimension alongside the much older pilgrimage tradition.
Odilia Chapel and ring oven
The Odilia Chapel stands on the edge of Panningen’s built-up area, at the junction of Beekstraat and Zandbergweg; there is a bench beside it. The chapel dates from 1864 and was restored in 1984. Inside, the red brick is exposed. An image of Saint Odilia stands on an altar behind reflective Plexiglas.
The Ringoven on the western edge of Panningen is also part of the town’s history. The former ring oven building was designed in 1909. The complex remained in operation until the early 1990s and was then considered the last traditionally operating ring oven complex in Limburg. Its history thus spans the design of the building through to its former industrial use.
Market and culture in the centre
DOK6 is located in the centre of Panningen. The venue includes a theatre, a service cinema, a café with a restaurant, a foyer and a business lounge. The programme and individual facilities may change; if you are planning a specific visit, it is worth checking the current events programme.
The Panningen weekly market takes place every Wednesday from 09:00 to 16:00. As recurring market hours may change, it is best to check the current schedule before your visit. This makes it easy to plan the market as a separate activity, while DOK6 offers another option for culture and events.
On foot and by bike
The Nature Walk Panningen leads from the industrial area into the countryside around Panningen. Its described route therefore has a different focus from the town’s architectural and industrial history. VVV Panningen offers a selection of cycling and walking routes as well as local regional products.
There is also the IVN tour programme in Peel en Maas for cyclists: five designated cycling routes lead to remarkable and monumental trees. Along the way, the programme also explores art, landscape and the stories behind the trees; Panningen is listed in the town overview. As route availability may change, check the current tours before planning your trip.
If you are deciding between a walk and a cycling tour, their themes differ: the Nature Walk leads from the industrial area into the countryside, while the IVN programme connects trees with themes of art, landscape and storytelling. For a stay focused on local history, the different construction periods and former uses of the church, chapels and Ringoven take centre stage instead.
