Helden can be explored through two distinct themes: local history and nature. Lambertus Church on Mariaplein and Museum Peel en Maas represent cultural history; Heldense Bossen offers an extensive woodland and shifting-sand landscape with opportunities for nature watching. Guided walks and cycling tours, as well as cooking workshops, round out the selection.

Church and Local History on Mariaplein

Lambertus Church on Mariaplein was built in 1455 on the commission of the Carthusians from Roermond. The first documented mention of St. Lambertus Church in Helden dates to 1230. These dates have different historical significance: 1230 is the year of the first mention, while 1455 is the year the church on Mariaplein was built. There is also a statue of Saint Lambert at St. Lambertus Church. Rob Stultiens created it in 1953; it is one of his earliest works of art.

Mariaplein itself also tells of everyday life in the past. The square in the centre of Helden has a kiosk and is known locally as “de Pool.” It was once the site of a livestock watering trough; a pump now serves as a reminder.

Museum Peel en Maas

Museum Peel en Maas is housed in the former Mariaklooster (Mary Monastery). The building dates from 1929 and contains nineteen museum rooms. Its collection is broad in scope: it consists mainly of archaeological objects, agricultural and other tools, personal belongings, documentation on the Second World War, including the barracks, popular piety, furniture and clothing. The museum brings together a range of historical and everyday themes.

There are more than thirty activity stations for children. Specific exhibition details may change.

Guided Tours and Nature Experiences

The “Erfgoed Route Limburg” GPS heritage app includes a walking and cycling route through Helden featuring historical highlights. Check whether the app is available before your trip. IVN Helden e.o. organises guided walks and cycling tours. On request, the walking group offers informative guided nature walks.

This gives you a choice of different formats: the app combines a route with historical highlights, while IVN organises guided tours. You can choose between a GPS heritage route and a guided tour without confusing their respective themes.

Heldense Bossen: Shifting Sand, Forest and Wildlife Watching

Heldense Bossen forms the part of an extensive shifting-sand area that lies within Helden, between the municipalities of Helden, Kessel and Maasbree. Most of the shifting-sand area was planted with Scots pine in the past. People walk and cycle in Heldense Bossen; the extensive woodland is considered a quiet area and does not experience high recreational pressure.

Nature watching is another reason to visit. The main focus is on birds, mammals, insects and mosses. Alongside the woodland, there is a named route, “Parels aan de Maas”: it starts in Heldense Bossen in Helden and is 46 kilometres long. This length refers to the route; the woodland itself is used for walking and cycling.

Cooking Workshops in Helden

Kookstudio de Garde in Helden offers hands-on cooking workshops. This adds another theme to church history, the museum and outdoor activities: the focus of the workshop is cooking itself. Together with the guided tours, this expands the range beyond sightseeing and nature watching.
