A bell dating from 1399, a former monastery and the traces of an unfinished canal: Maasbree combines village history with routes and landscapes in the surrounding area. The sites and paths offer different points of interest, from historic buildings to wetland habitats.

Village history in buildings and memorial sites

An Aldegundis bell, cast in July 1399, hangs in the Sint Aldegundiskerk. It has a diameter of 81 centimetres. Huis van de Loo was built between 1830 and 1840 using traditional craftsmanship. These two details offer a glimpse into different periods of local architectural history.

The former St. Jozef monastery was built in 1902–1903 in a blend of Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Gothic styles. In cultural and historical terms, it is regarded as an example of the smaller monasteries founded for care and education in the early 20th century. At Maasbree cemetery, the entrance gate and wall date from 1911 and are protected as a monument. Thus, architectural style, historic use and heritage protection stand side by side as distinct aspects.

Memorial sites are also part of this picture: the Onderduikersmonument commemorates the gratitude of former people in hiding for the help and protection provided by the village’s residents. Two chapels add further historical connections. The Maria-in-’t-Rooth Chapel was built around 1695 near the former Huis Bree. The Maria Chapel, Maria van de Vrede, stands on Korte Heide in Maasbree, at a crossroads of country lanes. It was moved stone by stone in 2012 and reconsecrated in 2013.

Natural areas with different characteristics

Aschbroek, an area of about eight hectares, lies west of Maasbree in the surrounding area. This nature reserve is partly marshy and rich in birdlife. Winkel lies northwest of the village and consists mostly of alder carr woodland. Some unpaved paths run alongside the Elsbeek there. The two areas therefore differ both in their woodland and wetland character and in the paths described.

The varied, hilly and water-rich Dubbroek lies in the surrounding area between Maasbree and Baarlo. The area formed around a large, partly silted-up bend in the Maas. Comparing the landscapes, Dubbroek has a different focus from Aschbroek or Winkel: it is shaped by its location along the former river bend, while the other two areas are described in terms of wetlands and alder carr woodland.

Walk or cycle route

The Maasbrees Dorpsommetje is a tourist walking route of about six kilometres. It passes notable historic and scenic sites in the Maasbree community.

The public Kapellenroute van Maasbree is a 46.7-kilometre cycling route using numbered bicycle junctions. It leads to Maasbree, where the Sint Aldegundiskerk towers above the village. The route is laid out differently from the Dorpsommetje: it is a cycling route with a stated length and junctions, while the walking route is about six kilometres long. Check the latest route details before setting out, as they may change.

Another cycling route follows the course of Napoleon’s unfinished Noordervaart Canal and leads through Maasbree, Helden and Meijel towards Nederweert. The canal remains can be seen at several locations near Maasbree, particularly along the provincial road to Venlo. The landscape also reveals traces of the canal project that was never completed.

Events and seasonal produce

For decades, Kermis Maasbree has marked the start of the fair season in the region. The Ossefeesten have been an annual tradition in Maasbree for more than 60 years. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the specific event dates before booking.

In Maasbree, vending machines offer seasonal vegetables, home-grown potatoes and fresh eggs. Asparagus and strawberries from the fields in Maasbree are available seasonally, so the selection may vary throughout the year. These products add a practical connection to locally grown produce alongside the walking, cycling and cultural attractions.
