The Wilhelminaberg was formed from spoil from the Staatsmijn Wilhelmina mine—a tangible trace of Landgraaf’s mining history. Nearby, historic buildings tell stories of other eras: from a probable 14th-century defensive line to castle ruins and a mill that ground grain for centuries. Landgraaf can thus be explored through different chapters of its history.

Stream valley, trails and historic traces

Park Gravenrode is a tourist and recreational area on the border of Landgraaf, Kerkrade and Heerlen. The Strijthagerbeek flows through the area in a beautifully wooded stream valley. If you would like to include a longer route in your plans, the Parkstadroute is an approximately 34-kilometre cycling and walking trail that passes through Landgraaf.

The Landgraaf defensive line is another historic trace of the area. It was probably a defensive structure dating from the second half of the 14th century. In some places, it is still visible in the landscape as a sunken lane. Its tentative interpretation and the remains visible only in places make it a different kind of historical testimony from the clearly identified castle ruins.

Mills, castles and architectural history

For centuries, the Strijthagermolen ground grain using the water power of the Strijthagerbeek. Its earliest known mention dates from 1630. The roots of Kasteel Strijthagen go back even further: it dates from the 13th century. However, the present-day castle is an 18th-century building, constructed on the foundations of its medieval predecessor. The Slothoeve belonging to the castle dates from 1690.

Slot Schaesberg in Landgraaf is the ruin of a 16th-century castle. The outlines of its associated 17th-century Bauhoeve have also been preserved. If you are planning a visit, check the visitor information in advance. This makes the historic site a practical point to include in your plans without assuming it is currently accessible.

The Heilige Drievuldigheid originated as a simple, brick-built hall church dating from 1726. It houses several notable pieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Rimburg water tower tells a different architectural story: the tower and its associated clean-water cellar are listed as Rijksmonuments. The tower was built in 1925–1926 by the former “Laura en Vereniging” coal mine in Eygelshoven.

The history of Lauradorp can also be dated precisely: the village was established between 1926 and 1931 in the meadows near the ribbon villages of Waubach and Groenstraat. Together with the older buildings and traces of mining, this offers a view of very different periods in regional history.

Experiences for different interests

On the Wilhelminaberg, an outdoor staircase with 508 steps leads to the summit. From there, at 225 metres above NAP, you can enjoy views across the Euregio. If you are interested in the hill and its mining past, you could also consider the Adventure Valley Trail: this freely accessible walking trail runs alongside the climbing park and leads to the hill’s mining past. As route conditions can change, check the latest information before setting out.

SnowWorld Landgraaf and Mondo Verde offer different experiences. SnowWorld has five ski slopes and eight lifts, including a six-person chairlift. As facilities can change, it is worth checking the latest information before making plans. Mondo Verde covers 250,000 m² and combines gardens with unusual animals and attractions. The theme park is wheelchair accessible and has, among other facilities, paved paths and adapted sanitary facilities. As these facilities can change, check the latest visitor information if you have specific needs.

For a stay centred around a specific event, Pinkpop is one possibility: the music festival takes place annually around Pentecost in Landgraaf. Check the dates for the relevant year before planning your trip around it. Another local tradition can be found in old Rimburg. On certain days, a traditional bakehouse is fired up, where you can try a slice of old-fashioned baked Vlaai. Check the specific dates in advance.

Getting there and planning

The municipality of Landgraaf is accessible by public transport by train and bus. Check the latest connections for your journey. You can then decide whether to focus primarily on historic buildings, landscape and trails, or the leisure activities mentioned above. This lets you prioritise the different themes according to your own interests, without assuming a fixed order of visits.
