Landgraaf brings together several distinct reasons to visit: SnowWorld offers skiing and snowboarding, the landscape of South Limburg’s stream valleys defines the natural setting of Strijthagerbeekdal, and regional baking traditions extend back to grain cultivation. There is also a theme and family park, as well as traces of history. When planning, a good first question is therefore which of these highlights you would like to focus on.
Snow, a climbing park and longer routes
SnowWorld in Landgraaf offers beginners and advanced skiers and snowboarders five slopes with fresh snow. The facilities also include a climbing park. These are two different types of activity; when choosing a focus for your trip, it may be decisive whether you would rather concentrate on the slopes or the climbing park.
The Parkstadroute offers a different focus: it is an approximately 34-kilometre cycling and hiking route that passes through Beekdaelen, Heerlen, Brunssum, Landgraaf, Kerkrade and Simpelveld. A route through several municipalities offers a different kind of activity from things to do at a single destination. If you are planning to make cycling or hiking the main theme of your trip, the Parkstadroute offers a distinct perspective spanning multiple municipalities.
Themed gardens and stream-valley landscape
Mondo Verde is a 250,000-square-metre family park with unusual animals and attractions in a green setting. It also features themed gardens from different parts of the world. Alongside animals and attractions, the gardens give the park another focus with an international outlook.
Strijthagerbeekdal is home to many plants and animals typical of South Limburg’s stream-valley landscape. These include the yellow violet, alternate-leaved golden-saxifrage, yellowhammer, badger and numerous butterflies. The species range from plants to birds and mammals to butterflies, bringing the landscape type to life through concrete examples.
Ruins, a defensive line and Pinkpop
The ruins of Kasteel Schaesberg in the dry valley near Schaesberg comprise the remains of a walled complex, or one surrounded by a moat, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Another historical trace is the centuries-old Landgraaf defensive line, which is visible in the landscape as a sunken lane in some places. These provide two different kinds of evidence of the past: structural remains and a feature visible in the landscape.
Pinkpop has also been closely associated with Landgraaf since 1988. The 55th edition took place from 19 to 21 June 2026 at the Megaland event site in Landgraaf. The longstanding connection to the location and the precisely dated 2026 weekend offer two different points of reference for this relationship.
Baking days and grain traditions
Public baking days are held at 't Bakkes Rimburg six times a year, weather permitting. Visitors can enjoy Vlaai and drinks there. Since the baking days depend on the weather, it is advisable to check the specific date in advance.
The work at 't Bakkes Rimburg also includes growing and processing grain. Traditional varieties such as wheat, rye and spelt are grown there; since 2022, the grain has been used for bread and Vlaai. Cultivation, harvesting and threshing are done using old machinery and draft horses, after which the grain is milled in a traditional mill. In this way, the region’s food traditions extend from grain cultivation to the finished baked goods.
