Dorpsstraat in Wamel runs along a medieval dike; at the same time, the village was situated at a fordable point in the Waal and thus on an ancient Roman trade route. Church and villa architecture, walking trails, a year-round ferry service and an exhibition along a route complete the picture. This offers several ways to shape a stay: architectural history, walking by the river or a route featuring historical stories.

What do the dike and the Waal tell us about Wamel?

The medieval dike along which Dorpsstraat runs was called Waalbandijk until around 1860. The fordable point in the Waal connected Wamel to an ancient Roman trade route. These two details reveal different aspects of the village’s history: the dike shapes the course of a present-day street, while the former river crossing placed Wamel on a trade route. The approximate date when the name Waalbandijk was in use should be distinguished from the dating of the Roman route.

Churches and a villa: architectural history in Wamel

The Hervormde Kerk in Wamel includes the five-sided choir and transept of the parish church, built in the 15th century and restored between 1952 and 1957. The choir’s eastern end follows five sides of an imagined octagon; the transept runs perpendicular to the nave. The Protestant church in Wamel was first mentioned in writing in a document dating from 1129–1134. Its organ was built by Hermanus Knipscheer in 1865. These dates therefore refer to different milestones: the first written mention, the construction of the church, its restoration and the building of the organ.

Another glimpse into architectural history is Villa Lakenburg, dating from the 19th century. It was built on the cellars of the former Lakenburg Castle. The southeastern cellar is almost square; its groin vault rests on a central pillar. Here, the history of the former castle can be connected to a specific architectural detail rather than being understood only through the age of the villa.

Walking and the ferry: what conditions apply?

You can walk along the Waal on the Struinroute Tiel–Druten from April through October. When water levels are high, an alternative route is available, usually along the dike. The walk can start at Hotel Restaurant ’t Veerhuis in Wamel. Dogs are not allowed on this route, even on a leash. Check the latest route information before setting out, especially if high water might make an alternative necessary.

The ferry between Tiel and Wamel carries cyclists and pedestrians. It is operated by the vessel “Pomona” and runs year-round. Check the timetable before crossing. The Vrijheidsroute Tiel–Wamel crosses the Waal by ferry to Wamel and continues from there along the dike towards Varik. In Wamel, the route features a second exhibition about the history of the Land van Maas en Waal. Information panels and QR codes bring personal stories to life.

The two routes offer different points of reference: for the Struinroute, the season and water level matter when choosing your path; the Vrijheidsroute goes by ferry and along the dike towards Varik, and includes the exhibition in Wamel. You can choose according to whether a seasonal walk along the Waal or a route with an exhibition better suits your planned stay.

Floodplains and other outings

The nature restoration project in the floodplains near Wamel, Dreumel and Heerewaarden runs from 2016 to 2027. Plans include five connected side channels, flood areas, natural grasslands and floodplain woodland. A 15-kilometre river nature area is developing along the Waal and will remain open to the public. The project therefore connects several floodplain locations; the 15 kilometres refers to the river nature area along the Waal.

For a different kind of outing, there are children’s farms in Wamel. You can pet the animals, feed the goats or simply look around. The outing is free and suitable for all ages.
