More than 200 show gardens at Bloemenpark Appeltern bring garden ideas to life. The number may change over time. The Mooi Appeltern walking and rambling route has different sections, while the restored Stoomgemaal de Tuut brings the history of technology into focus. Sint Servatiuskerk and traces of Huis Appeltern add a historical perspective. When choosing a place to stay, you can therefore put varying degrees of emphasis on gardens, nature, technology, architectural history and local history.

Garden Ideas and Nature for Children

At Bloemenpark Appeltern, garden ideas can be experienced firsthand in more than 200 show gardens. Their variety makes the visit a highlight in its own right for anyone interested in garden design. Adventure Island offers a different kind of experience: it has a nature-inspired playground where children can discover nature through play. Garden ideas and children’s experience of nature are distinct interests that may influence your choice of trip.

Technology and Architectural History

Stoomgemaal de Tuut has been fully restored and is in working order. During regular opening hours, visitors can tour the entire pumping station, inside and out. On steam weekends, you can see the facility in full operation at close range; dates vary by season. Regular opening hours and steam weekends are therefore two different points to consider when planning a visit. Check seasonal opening hours and steam weekend dates before travelling.

Sint Servatiuskerk is a Neo-Gothic basilica with a tower. It was built in 1906–1907 to a design by architect C. Franssen. Its architectural style, architect and date of construction provide a clear architectural and historical context for the church.

Traces of the Heerlijkheid Appeltern

The Heerlijkheid Appeltern has been inhabited for more than 1,000 years. The oldest written record appears in a papal bull from 1134, which mentions the village and the castle. These two details shed light on different historical aspects: one describes the long period of habitation, while the other gives a dated written record. The remains of Huis Appeltern lie within the still-intact moat of the Heerlijkheid Appeltern.

Mooi Appeltern: Routes and Information

When the Mooi Appeltern walking and rambling route opened in November 2018, it comprised a 4.6 km blue route and a 5.7 km yellow route. It now also includes a 2.1 km purple loop and a 1.9 km red extension towards Bloemenpark Appeltern. These lengths describe different route types, not two similar circular walks: 2.1 km is the loop, while 1.9 km is the extension. The blue section across the factory grounds has been removed because fences were installed there; an alternative route is in place. Follow the arrows on the posts and check the latest route information before setting off.

Moringerwaarden: Check the Water Level

Moringerwaarden is inaccessible when water levels are high. Brandrode cattle are usually present in the open area. If you are considering a visit, take the water level into account as a condition for access.
