The Maasbommelse Waard reveals a special side of West Maas En Waal: in this young river nature area, you can observe river wildlife, and many birds can be found there. There are no marked hiking trails, but visitors are free to explore the area. If you prefer to follow a named route, the Moringerwaarden offer a different way to experience the landscape.

River Landscapes on Foot and from the Water

The Struinroute through the Moringerwaarden follows the water and offers views of the inland lake. It passes through a landscape of butterflies, birds and frogs. The route lies in the eastern part of the Gouden Ham. This brings two distinct nature experiences together: freely wandering through the Maasbommelse Waard and following a route through the Moringerwaarden, where the views and wildlife shape the journey.

The Gouden Ham offers another highlight: it is one of the largest water sports and recreation areas in the Netherlands and has a 700-metre-long beach. At the Gouden Ham, you can take a boat tour or rent a small boat. You can also explore the area by canoe, sloop or sailboat. These options offer different ways to enjoy the water—from a boat tour to exploring on your own in various types of watercraft.

Gardens and Special Places

Those interested in garden design will find a dedicated attraction at Bloemenpark Appeltern. The garden inspiration park covers nearly 23 hectares and includes more than 200 different model gardens. Its size gives you a sense of the park’s scale, while the many different gardens show the variety of design ideas on display. You can also reserve breakfast, afternoon tea or a picnic basket at Bloemenpark Appeltern. As the specific offerings may change, check in advance what is available for your visit.

Discover Maasbommel’s Hanseatic History

In the Middle Ages, Maasbommel was the smallest Hanseatic town in the Netherlands. Around the 15th century, it was a subsidiary town of the Hanseatic city of Nijmegen. A mural near the trailer ramp at Veerweg 1 depicts basket weaving—a craft for which Maasbommel was known during the Hanseatic period. This brings the town’s history to life not only through historical context, but also in a specific image found in the town itself.

Another glimpse into the region’s history of technology is Stoomgemaal de Tuut: it is the last still-operating steam pumping station in the Land van Maas en Waal. Alongside Maasbommel’s Hanseatic history, it offers a different perspective on the past: here, the focus is on an engineering structure; there, on the town’s former importance and a craft associated with it.

Plan Routes and Ferry Connections

The Beleef de Maas route passes through Maasbommel, takes the ferry at Megen and follows the recreation area De Gouden Ham on the return journey. As a separate connection, the Maasbommel–Megen car ferry crosses the Maas from Maasbommel to Megen. Ferry service may vary seasonally or depending on water conditions, so check the relevant connection before setting out.
