Wezepsche Heide covers 260 hectares and is part of the Natura 2000 network. It is accessible from sunrise to sunset; check before your visit whether any temporary restrictions apply. This time window can help you plan: schedule your stay on the heath within the stated hours. Part of the long-distance walking route Het Westerborkpad runs through the area. This makes it easy to include the heath in your trip planning both as a natural area and as part of a long-distance walking route.
Woodland scenery and walking trails
The De Vuursteenberg nature area is a typical lichen-rich Veluwe woodland landscape on the push moraine of the north-western Veluwe, and is also part of an ancient glacial meltwater terrace. It is also part of the Veluwe’s free-ranging wilderness. A 2.5 km red walking trail runs through the area. If you are choosing between the landscape and the trail, you do not have to choose just one here: the route combines a clearly specified distance with the area’s woodland character and glacial landform. If you want to take both distance and scenery into account when planning a walk, you will find both points of reference here.
Walking and cycling routes
The Looproute Wezep runs partly through Wezep Noord and is suitable for both walkers and runners. It follows paved ground and is lit in the evening. These features give the route a different profile from the red walking trail through De Vuursteenberg: for the Looproute, the paved surface, its suitability for walking or running, and evening lighting are key; for the red trail, its 2.5 km length is a clear point of comparison. If you have not yet decided between cycling and walking, you can choose from various walking and cycling routes starting at the Veluwe TOP Wezep car park.
The Fietsroute WO2 Oldebroek is more than 42 km long. In the municipality of Oldebroek, it passes crash sites, hiding places, streets named after people who lost their lives, and other notable Second World War locations. So distance is not the only factor to consider: the route also has a clear historical focus. Compared with the 2.5 km walk, this route offers different ways of getting around and a distinctly different distance. You can weigh up whether you would prefer to plan a specific walk through a woodland landscape or a longer cycling route connected with the Second World War.
Landgoed De Oldhorst
Landgoed De Oldhorst is in Wezep. The estate house is a Rijksmonument, a listed national heritage site, built in 1751. The estate includes a park-like garden area with streams, a distinctive grotto and berceaux. The house and garden therefore represent two different aspects of a visit: the architectural history of the house and the layout of the garden with its waterways and special features.
As De Oldhorst is privately owned, the estate can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Tour availability is announced separately; check before your visit. Plan to visit as part of a guided tour and confirm in advance whether a date is available.
