Three themes offer a clear focus for a stay in Oldebroek: farming history, historic buildings and routes through natural and cultural landscapes. You can focus on the museum and churches, or choose walking and cycling routes of varying lengths and themes.

Farm History, Church and Windmill

Boerderijmuseum De Bovenstreek shows how people used to work, harvest and live in the Veluwe. According to the museum, various events are held throughout the year, focusing on historic crafts. It therefore offers both an insight into past ways of life and a programme of events centred on traditional crafts.

The Sint Lambertuskerk, also known as Dorpskerk, is a Rijksmonument and features partly Romanesque and partly Gothic architecture. The tower and chancel date from different periods: the tower dates from the 14th century, and the chancel from the 15th century. During the war, the vaults beside the tower served as hiding places for Jewish people, pilots and people in hiding.

Molen de Hoop also has its own history: Kornelis Blaauw built it in 1853. When the blue flag is flying, the windmill is open to visitors; the miller then offers a tour and explains how it works. Check whether the flag is flying before you arrive.

Choosing Walking Routes by Length and Landscape

Two five-kilometre routes offer different points of interest. The Bovenstreekroute runs through the countryside around Boerderijmuseum De Bovenstreek; highlights include farmhouses and polders. The Mulligenroute is in the area around Oldebroek and also highlights farmhouses and polders. The main difference, then, is not the length but the area from which each tour starts.

The marked Het Vreepad is considerably longer at 16 kilometres and starts, among other places, at Boerderijmuseum De Bovenstreek in Oldebroek. It runs through the varied countryside of the municipality of Oldebroek, passing meadows and country estates as well as the remains of a sand drift, an old settlement and historic farmhouses. Check the path conditions before setting out.

The ten-kilometre Eekterroute offers a medium-distance option. It runs through the area around Oldebroek and Oosterwolde; highlights include farmhouses, woodland and polders, as well as a country estate. The walking routes mentioned here therefore differ in both length and the landscapes described.

Cycling: Crafts, Churches and Landscapes

The Boerderij Beleeftocht combines a visit to Boerderijmuseum De Bovenstreek with a healthy farm breakfast. It is provided in an attractive backpack and can be enjoyed along the way or at the museum. The package’s availability may vary. It includes four cycling routes ranging from 23.5 to 43.5 kilometres, which can be followed using a special web app. The app features games, puzzles and interesting facts for the journey.

The cycling route “Van Kerkdorp tot Dorpskerk” starts in Oldebroek. At every church along the route, a QR code at the entrance provides information, photos and videos about that particular church. The Fietsroute WO2 Oldebroek runs through the municipality of Oldebroek, passing crash sites, hiding places, streets named after people who were killed and other notable locations.

Other routes have their own focus: the Landgoedroute runs through the area around Wezep, Oosterwolde and Oldebroek, highlighting five country estates, farmhouses and polders. The Polderroute runs through the area around Oldebroek, Noordeinde, Reevediep and Kamperveen; its highlights include farmhouses, the Reevediep, polders and birds.

Heathland and an Annual Market Day

Oldebroekse Heide is a nature area in Noord Veluwe. Coniferous forests lie between the heathlands, and visitors may spot hares, foxes, rabbits, wild boar, roe deer and red deer in the area. This landscape adds a natural setting to the historic themes, with different points of interest from the churches, museum and windmill.

A special date in the annual calendar is the traditional Schapenmarkt in Oldebroek. It is held every year on the Wednesday before 17 September. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the exact event date for your travel year.
