Rossum offers a mix of architectural history, river views and routes through the riverside landscape. Slot Rossum and the tower of the Hervormde Kerk provide contrasting architectural features; along the Waal, you’ll find viewpoints and routes into the landscape. During your stay, you can focus on culture, observing nature or walking routes.
Castle and church tower
Slot Rossum is located in the centre of Rossum and is now used as the town hall. Baron van Randwijck built the small castle, with its rectangular floor plan, around the middle of the 19th century in the Neo-Tudor style. It was built on the site of a medieval castle that had been demolished in the 18th century. Battlements, Gothic-looking windows and a moat characterise this eclectic building.
The tower of the Hervormde Kerk provides a different architectural feature. The Romanesque tower is made of tuff and decorated with round-arched and rectangular blind panels, arcaded friezes and sound openings with paired small columns. The two buildings thus offer different details to look out for on a walk through Rossum: at the castle, the combination of Neo-Tudor style and eclectic forms; at the church tower, its Romanesque articulation and carefully designed openings.
Views of the Waal and stork station
A Social Sofa on the Waaldijk in Rossum invites you to rest and offers sweeping views across the Waal. It combines a specific place to pause with an open view of the river. A path through the Slingerbos behind Slot Rossum also leads to the dyke and a viewpoint overlooking the Waal. This offers two different options: pause at the Social Sofa or follow the path through the Slingerbos to the dyke.
Rossum also has an outlying station for white storks, which opened in 1989. Its poles are visible from the road; whether the birds can be seen depends on the season. The station is still active, has around 20 nests and takes part, among other things, in Stichting Ooievaars Research & Knowhow (STORK)’s annual stork count. The approximate number of nests and seasonal visibility offer two different planning considerations: the station is an ongoing active project, while stork sightings may vary with the season.
Routes through the river and riverside landscape
The Zandslagenpad follows the river from Rossum for a longer stretch along the Waaldijk towards Hurwenen. The route then passes through the area known as the Zandslagen. The return route goes through the riverside embankment landscape, past vegetable and ornamental gardens and small orchards on the outer slope of the Maasdijk, known as “overtuinen”. The starting and finishing point is Restaurant De Gouden Molen at Waaldijk 5.
The Zandslagenpad is marked with a blue clog symbol and can be walked in either direction. Before setting out, check the current route, as a temporary diversion may change the markings. As an alternative walking route, the path through the Slingerbos behind Slot Rossum leads to the dyke and a view of the Waal. The Zandslagenpad passes through the river and riverside embankment landscape; the Slingerbos route focuses on the path to the dyke and the viewpoint overlooking the river.
Event dates
The fair is also one of the local events. If an event permit has been granted or a notification accepted, it is scheduled as a collective celebration; it runs from Thursday to Sunday. If the fair is important to your travel plans, check the specific event dates.
The main attractions can be clearly distinguished when choosing your destination: Slot Rossum and the tower of the Hervormde Kerk offer architectural history, while the Zandslagenpad, Slingerbos and viewpoints along the Waal focus on routes and the river landscape.
