Heerewaarden is located on a sandy deposit between the Maas and Waal. Its riverside setting provides a clear backdrop for a stay combining nature and local history. The De Grote Rivieren visitor center is the information point for the river region. The area around the center is ideal for walks through nature, along rivers and dikes, through floodplains, and past historic sites. This makes it possible to discover Heerewaarden through several specific themes: the landscape between the rivers, routes along the dikes, and traces of the area’s former fishing industry. If you are looking for accommodation in the village, you can plan your stay around these interests and decide whether walking, cycling or local history should be your main focus.

Walks from the visitor center

The “Rondje Heerewaarden” walking route starts at the De Grote Rivieren visitor center and follows dikes and passes fortifications. Its route may change, so check the current route before setting out. You can also ask at the center for information about walking opportunities in Heerewaarden and the surrounding area, starting from five kilometers. This gives you two distinct ways to start planning: a named walking route that begins at the center, or information about walking opportunities in the village and its surroundings. The route’s specific landmarks are its starting point, the dikes and the fortifications.

Cycling over dikes and by ferry

The Fort Sint-Andries route is a 35-kilometer cycle route along dikes and cycle paths. It crosses the Maas by ferry at two points. The ferries operate seasonally, so check their service before setting out. The route and conditions may also change, making it worthwhile to check the current route. Unlike “Rondje Heerewaarden,” the cycle route differs in its mode of transport, its specified length and its Maas crossings by ferry. It therefore involves different planning considerations from the walking route; the two routes should not be treated as the same.

Ferry crossings over the Waal and Maas

The Varik–Heerewaarden ferry for pedestrians and cyclists operates between April and October and crosses the Waal. Since this is a seasonal service, check the timetable, as operating details may change. This ferry should be distinguished from the two ferries on the Fort Sint-Andries route: those cross the Maas, whereas this service connects Varik and Heerewaarden across the Waal. If you include both ferry services in your plans, check each one separately. They involve different rivers and different connections.

Traces of river fishing

Architectural details also tell the story of fishing. Veerstraat 13 is an old fisherman’s house, identified by a façade stone depicting a pike above the door. At the Toanhut on the corner of Veerstraat and Maasstraat, fishing nets were preserved with resin. This describes a specific fishing-related task: the nets were treated to make them last longer. A staircase leads to the harbor of the former river fishing fleet. The house sign, net preservation and harbor connection show different sides of this history. They add the former work on and around the river to the picture of the dikes and river landscape.
