When looking for accommodation in Wekerom, it helps to consider the types of experiences on offer: they range from landscapes and trails to views, reconstructed Celtic Fields and seasonal fruit picking. This lets you first weigh up which theme suits your trip.
Nature reserve with rare shifting sand
Wekeromse Zand lies southwest of Wekerom and covers more than 500 hectares. It is a nature reserve with woodland, heathland, farmland and a unique area of shifting sand. Actively drifting sand is rare in northwestern Europe. For travellers interested in distinctive landscape features, this is a clear natural highlight: what matters here is not just the size of the area, but also the rare dynamics of the sand.
Walking trails and views
The Wekeromse Zand Wildlife Walk passes a wildlife-watching site. The Trage Tocht Wekeromse Zand and Landgoed de Valouwe starts in a car park near Vijfsprongweg in Wekerom and passes through Wekeromse Zand and Landgoed de Valouwe. When choosing between the two walks, the wildlife-watching site is the highlight of the Wildlife Walk; the Trage Tocht is defined by its starting point and route through two named areas.
The De Bult observation tower stands in Wekerom next to Wekeromse Zand. From the tower, visitors can enjoy views of the Veluwe and the Gelderse Vallei. The tower is also part of the Klompenpad Beek en Bult. This makes the views a destination in their own right, alongside the wildlife-watching site and the routes described above.
Celtic Fields and reconstructions
The reconstructed Celtic Fields at Wekeromse Zand are clearly visible from the ground. Celtic Fields have been reconstructed along Vijfsprongweg in Wekerom to match their former appearance. The Wekeromse Zand, Celtic Fields & Middelpunt route passes reconstructed Celtic Fields around an Iron Age farmstead. Alongside nature and views, the focus here is on reconstruction based on a former appearance.
Kabouterpad De Hartenberg
Kabouterpad De Hartenberg is about 900 metres long and fully accessible to wheelchair users. Along the path are brightly painted gnome posts, little houses and other features. Length and accessibility are different criteria to consider: the approximate distance gives an idea of the route’s length, while wheelchair accessibility is a specific access feature. The colourful features also give Kabouterpad its own theme compared with the nature and history routes.
Fruit picking and visits
At De Jachthoeve in Wekerom, you can pick your own fruit in the orchard from June to November. If this activity is important to your trip, your travel dates should fall within this period. The Fruithof orchard at De Jachthoeve is a separate offering: it can be visited by arrangement with the managers. Fruit picking and visiting are subject to different conditions: picking is limited to the June-to-November season, while visits must be arranged with the managers.
