Ederveen offers a range of reasons to visit: nature and hiking, a cycling route you can ride independently, remembrance of the town’s liberation, and a seasonal pumpkin farm. This makes it possible to tailor your stay to your interests. The Pompoenenboerderij Ederveen is particularly relevant when planning your travel dates, while hiking, the Smaakfietsroute and the cultural sites offer other clearly distinct themes.
Nature and outdoor activities
Ederveen offers many opportunities for hiking and appealing natural surroundings. Cyclists can enjoy the Smaakfietsroute: van kaas tot sap. It runs through Ederveen and the stream landscape above the town and can be ridden independently by bicycle. This gives you two distinct ways to explore actively: a wide range of hiking options and a named route that you can ride independently, with a precisely specified landscape setting. When planning your days outdoors, you can choose based on your preferred way of getting around: hiking offers a wide range of options, while the Smaakfietsroute focuses specifically on cycling.
Remembrance and local history
The Centraal Monument commemorates Ederveen’s liberation on 24 April 1945 by the 49th British Infantry Division, the “Polar Bear Division”. It consists of three grey blocks and was unveiled in 1995. The two years are not interchangeable: 1945 refers to the event being commemorated, while 1995 is when the monument was unveiled. This distinction in time helps separate the occasion being commemorated from the later unveiling.
The Hervormde Kerk stands at Hoofdweg 85. It is a PKN Reformed congregation and also a municipal monument. This dual classification combines religious affiliation with municipal heritage status. Together with the Centraal Monument, it offers distinct points of connection to local history: one focuses on remembrance of a dated event, while the other combines a congregation with monument status. Kasteel Bruynhorst was also built in 1879 on the site of an older castle.
Pumpkin season at the Pompoenenboerderij
Every year, from August to November, the De Jong family’s farm becomes the Pompoenenboerderij Ederveen. A wide variety of pumpkins and gourds are grown there commercially, and visitors can choose them for themselves. This seasonal period makes a visit to the farm a specific reason to travel. If you want to choose your own varieties, it’s best to plan your visit between August and November. Growing and choosing your own go hand in hand: visitors decide for themselves which of the various pumpkins and gourds they would like to pick.
Accommodation and travel dates
When looking for a holiday apartment in Ederveen, you can decide on your reason for travelling in advance. If the Pompoenenboerderij is part of your plans, take August to November into account; nature, hiking, cycling and local history offer other areas of focus.
