Ede offers different ways to explore art and history: public art, museum exhibits, an open-air theatre and a memorial site. There is also a themed walk through the centre, activities in the De Ginkel area and routes with their own distinct focus. Art in the centre and the urban landscape
The stadsbeeldenroute in the centre of Ede consists of three walking routes that lead from one work of art to another. This makes art the guiding thread of a walk through the centre. Ede is also adorned with dozens of murals and graffiti works by national and international graffiti artists. So if you are interested in public art, you will find more here than just individual named works.
De Twaalf Apostelen consists of twelve works of art depicting the twelve apostles. They stand on pedestals at the corners and alongside the flower beds of the Grote Kerk. Both the number of figures and their specific arrangement are integral to this work of art in the urban landscape.
Museum, archaeology and remembrance
The collection of the Historisch Museum Ede includes objects and photographs that bear witness to Ede’s history and development. The museum presents art, cultural heritage, stories and temporary exhibitions. Its collection is presented in temporary exhibitions at different locations, as well as in educational projects. So if you want to visit a particular exhibition, keep an eye on its location and dates.
Cultura Erfgoed also offers a way to explore cultural history: it is located on the second floor of Cultura Ede. At the Archeo Hotspot of Cultura Erfgoed, visitors can help with archaeological research. Here, the focus is on taking part in archaeological work, while the collection of the Historisch Museum Ede comprises objects and photographs relating to the town’s history.
Mausoleum Paasberg Ede is a memorial site with a special connection to the history of the resistance. It contains 44 plaques bearing the names and birth and death dates of resistance fighters from Ede; 30 resistance fighters are also actually buried there. On 4 May, the mausoleum is the official place for commemorating the dead.
Theatre and mill history
Openluchttheater Ede was built in 1936 and is a Rijksmonument. Each year, it hosts various events and theatre performances. If you want to include a particular performance in your travel plans, check the dates for your travel period.
Concordiamolen was built in 1865 on the site of an earlier post mill. It is a smock mill and operates as a grain mill. The year refers to the construction of the present mill; the earlier post mill had already stood at this location.
Walks and outdoor activities
At Landgoed Kernhem, the Korte Keten wandelroute offers a chance to experience life on a farm. In the De Ginkel area, you can cycle, hike, fly a kite, go mountain biking and ride horses. De Ginkel is also home to red deer, wild boar, sheep, roe deer, wolves, badgers and foxes. This means a range of activity themes sit alongside the natural surroundings and their wildlife.
Cycling route and regional products
The Smaakfietsroute: van kaas tot sap is a self-guided cycling tour that you can take any day, where you can sample regional products in Ede, Lunteren, Ederveen and Renswoude, just beyond the municipal boundary. Along the way, you can meet the producers of the two distinctive cheeses, Brandroodkaas and Remekerkaas. This gives the cycling tour a different focus from the Korte Keten wandelroute, which centres on life on a farm.
