Visitors choosing Maurik for a stay can focus on cycling, architectural history and leisure activities. The Water Rijk cycling route offers a specific option for cycling, while the Hervormde Kerk and the De Beijenkorf windmill each reveal different aspects of the area’s buildings and history. There is also bowling, play areas for different age groups and day recreation. This offers a choice of a route with a stated distance as well as cultural and active pursuits.

Water Rijk cycling route

The Water Rijk cycling route is about 30 kilometres long. It follows the Nederrijn and the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal, starting and ending at Eiland van Maurik. The route length, waterways and start and end point provide three specific reference points for planning your ride. Check the current route before setting out, as route details may be revised.

Church and architectural history

The Hervormde Kerk in Maurik is a Late Gothic village church. Its nave has a pseudo-basilican design with pillars and wooden barrel vaults; the higher choir has rib vaults. Those interested in church architecture can compare two different types of vault within a single building. The tower is built of brick. Its lower four storeys date from the 14th century, while the bell chamber dates from the first half of the 16th century. The church’s design, the differences between the nave and choir, and the tower’s different construction periods are all noteworthy.

The mill and the area’s earlier history

The De Beijenkorf (De Hoop) windmill was built in 1873 by A.C. Kievit on the foundations of Maurik Castle, which had already been destroyed in 1417. The two dates mark distinct events: the destruction of the older castle and the construction of the mill centuries later. The mill’s history thus links a specific building with the area’s earlier history.

Another archaeological aspect concerns the Limes fort of Mannaricium. Archaeological finds from Maurik are interpreted as evidence that the Limes fort of Mannaricium must have been located there. Possible remains may lie in or around Eiland van Maurik, possibly 4 to 7 metres below today’s mean water level.

Leisure activities and a break

The Family Entertainment Center Mauk in Maurik offers bowling. Eiland Avontura has play areas for children aged 0 to 4 and for children aged 4 to 12. Each age group therefore has its own designated play area. Vakantiepark Eiland van Maurik also offers day recreation. Bowling, the age-specific play areas and day recreation offer different ways to spend leisure time in Maurik.

Molen van Maurik has a tea garden serving tea, toasties, baguettes, coffee, homemade apple pie and freshly prepared juices from the region. The tea garden is another option for a break. Check the current opening arrangements before visiting.
