A late Gothic village church, historic farms and a 14-kilometre walking trail give Eck en Wiel a distinct character shaped by architectural history and river landscapes.

Church, manor houses and historic farms

Eck en Wiel developed in the Middle Ages on a natural levee of the Nederrijn. The Hervormde kerk is a late Gothic village church with a three-aisled pseudo-basilica nave and a choir with a polygonal end. Its simple Early Gothic tower ends in a short, set-back spire. The church building brings together distinctly different architectural features in its nave and tower.

Huis Vredestein is a plastered manor house set in an attractive garden and dates from the second quarter of the 19th century. The listed farm complex at Rijnbandijk 5 was built in 1841 on the site of the former Huis te Wiel. The Veerhuis near the Rijnbandijk also has several historical layers: it may have a core dating from the 16th century, but most of the building dates from the 18th century. The Veerhuis contains a fireplace panel with a painting and the year 1680. Veerweg 3 is an early 19th-century farm with a T-shaped floor plan, on the corner of the Rijnbandijk.

Walking in the river landscape

The Mauderick en Wielepad is a 14-kilometre walking trail; the starting point is at the Heerlijkheid Eck en Wiel at Veerweg 5. The route passes the Nederrijn floodplains and old Eck en Wiel, following old paths through a historic river landscape with fruit and tree cultivation. Its length makes the trail a stand-alone walking option that you can make the focus of your day’s plans.

Near Eck en Wiel are the Mauriksche Waarden and the Ecksche Waarden, protected Natura 2000 areas consisting mainly of extensively managed grassland and a few ponds. The two natural areas have a different landscape character from the walking trail: grassland and ponds are the main features there.

The Heerlijkheid Eck en Wiel is an estate of more than 7 hectares on the edge of the village, with bodies of water and orchards. The area was elevated to a Heerlijkheid by the Duke of Guelders in 1288. The Heerlijkheid’s restaurant and Proeverij prepare fresh dishes using traditional methods and offer High Tea packages as well as an extensive buffet.
