Lienden can be explored through two distinct themes: the Batouwepad trail leads through the surrounding countryside, while De Zwaan Mill, the Hervormde Kerk and the Ellie Frank Memorial each offer their own historical and cultural perspectives. You can tailor your stay towards hiking and observing nature, or towards milling history, architecture and commemorative culture. The landscape route and historic sites offer different focal points, without requiring you to follow a set itinerary.

Landscape and Trails on the Batouwepad

The Batouwepad leads through the countryside around Lienden and along old riverbeds, orchards, winding dikes and the old Roman frontier, known as the Limes. Along the way, you will encounter a variety of landscape features and a historic landmark. The route is marked in both directions with purple clog symbols. The markings may change if the trail is updated, so check the latest information before setting out.

The Batouwepad also passes through the water-rich Marspolder, a former sand extraction area. From there, you can look out over a lake and watch for waterbirds. The likelihood of seeing wildlife may vary depending on the season. The Marspolder area also offers opportunities for walking. Check in advance whether any local trail restrictions apply.

Birdwatching in the Countryside

A birdwatching point has been set up in the former floodplain in the countryside around Lienden. Check local access conditions before visiting. White storks and sand martins can be found in the natural area near Lienden. These species offer a specific connection to the nature around the village, but their presence cannot be guaranteed on any particular day.

Mill, Church and Remembrance

De Zwaan is a prominent, round brick tower mill on a mill mound. It was completed in 1644, after an earlier post mill collapsed and was destroyed in January 1643. The mill brings together a clearly dated building history and a distinctive architectural form. For those interested in cultural history, the sequence of destruction and completion offers a particular insight into Lienden’s past.

The Hervormde Kerk in Lienden is a late Gothic pseudo-basilica. Its choir and tower were built around the second half of the 15th century. The church organ was built in 1841 by the organ builder C.F.A. Naber from Deventer. The building style, structural features and organ thus point to different aspects and periods in the church’s history.

The Ellie Frank Memorial offers a different focus: the bronze statue depicts a girl and commemorates Ellie Frank, a Jewish girl who was deported by the German occupying forces during the Second World War and murdered in a concentration camp. Alongside the buildings, an individual’s fate is also central to Lienden’s culture of remembrance.

Plan Your Travel Dates and Accommodation

When looking for a hotel in Lienden, you can first decide which themes you want to shape your stay: landscape and hiking, or architectural and commemorative history. If you plan to cross the Nederrijn by ferry, also take the season into account. The Limeslijn is a bicycle and passenger ferry between Rhenen and Lienden and operates only during the high season. Check the timetable in advance before including the crossing in your day’s plans.
