Around Wichmond, farms, pastures, fields and country estates shape the rural landscape. There are also two hiking trails with different routes, as well as a documented local and church history. The Ludgerpad passes through Wichmond, while the Ockhorstroute runs around Wichmond and Vierakker. You can plan your stay around hiking, cycling or the area’s historical details.
Hiking on Two Trails
The Ludgerpad is a 93-kilometre long-distance hiking trail that passes through Wichmond. It is divided into stages, which can also be walked individually as day hikes. From Wichmond, the trail heads towards Hengelo through rural surroundings with pastures, farms and unpaved paths. If you have only one day for hiking, you can choose a single stage rather than taking on the entire long-distance route. Check the conditions on the Ludgerpad before setting out.
The Ockhorstroute runs around Wichmond and Vierakker through the characteristic coulisse landscape of the Achterhoek. It follows paths through country estates and farms, as well as a restored church path. Brown signs featuring a white flying goose mark the route and help you find your way.
To choose between the trails, consider what you want to focus on when planning. With the Ludgerpad, you can plan according to the total distance or individual day stages. The Ockhorstroute is defined by its route around Wichmond and Vierakker and by the types of paths it follows. If you are planning a single day of hiking, you can choose a stage of the Ludgerpad. If the coulisse landscape, country-estate paths and church path are your main interests, the Ockhorstroute offers different points of interest.
Cyclists can also use the Dutch cycle junction network from Wichmond. Check the conditions on your planned route before setting off, as they can change.
Local History and Church Heritage
The earliest known mention of Wichmond, under the name Withmundi, dates from 794. The Protestant congregation continues the first church congregation established by Saint Ludger at the IJssel in Wichmond. The present-day Protestant church was built in 1855 for the Dutch Reformed congregation of the time and is among the oldest buildings in modern-day Wichmond. The former parsonage at Dorpsstraat 18 also dates from 1855.
The Hervormde Kerk at Dorpsstraat 16 is protected as a national monument (Rijksmonument) because of its single-manual organ. H. Knipscheer made the instrument in Amsterdam in 1867. The dates mark different milestones: the earliest known form of the name, the construction of the present-day church and the making of the organ.
Plan Your Stay
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Wichmond, first decide what you want to focus on during your days there: a single day stage on the Ludgerpad, the Ockhorstroute, cycling, or local and church history. Consider which of these matters most for your trip.
