Remigiuskerk, Bleekhuisje and Tegelroute offer different ways to explore Hengelo’s local history: through church architecture, a former working practice and commemorative markers in the village. There is also a cycling route through hamlets and a golf course on a historic estate. Visitors choosing Hengelo as a destination can pick from these different highlights rather than having to fit every experience into a single itinerary.

Church architecture and everyday life in the past

Remigiuskerk is a late Gothic pseudo-basilica; its three-sided chancel was built around 1400. This brings together the building’s overall type and a specifically shaped architectural feature. The chancel provides a chronological reference point for the building’s history, while the term “pseudo-basilica” describes the church’s architectural classification. For architecture enthusiasts, this distinction offers a tangible way to explore local heritage.

Bleekhuisje offers a different perspective on Hengelo’s past. The preserved house dates from 1750 and recalls the former practice of bringing laundry to Hengelo from the surrounding area to be bleached. The house’s story thus also points to an activity that connected the village with its wider surroundings. While the church is understood through its architectural form, the focus here is on a former working practice.

History on foot and by bike

The Tegelroute Hengelo is a walking route about 3.2 kilometres long. Seventeen large granite photo tiles are laid at historic sites in the village. The route offers a lasting picture of the village’s lost cultural and historical heritage. This gives local history a tangible form: both the tiles’ number and their material help shape the route, as does their historical significance.

The Tegelroute is suitable for wheelchair and rollator users. This is a relevant consideration when choosing a walking route. As route conditions can change, check the current situation before your visit.

The Fietsrondje Hengelo adds a cycling route to the options. It passes through various hamlets and along the Varsselring. The Tegelroute focuses on historic sites in the village; the Fietsrondje takes you through the hamlets and along the Varsselring. To choose between them, consider whether a walking route focused on village history or a cycling route better suits your planned stay.

Golf, an estate and motorsport

Golf is also tied to a specific location in Hengelo: Golfbaan ’t Zelle is on Landgoed Zelle in Hengelo, Gelderland. The estate is historic and has Rijksmonument status. The golf course has an 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole short golf course (Par 3). The facility therefore offers two different formats; the Par 3 designation applies to the short golf course.

The Hengelose Auto en Motorvereniging held the 58th edition of the Road Races Hengelo on 2 and 3 May 2026 at the Varsselring road circuit.
