A protected village landscape and historic architectural styles shape Hummelo; the wet woodland of Hekenbroek lies nearby. The village’s history spans several clearly distinct periods. For an active break, consider a cycling tour through Hummelo and a walk in Hekenbroek. When planning, heritage, cycling and nature each provide a distinct focus.
Village History and Historic Architectural Styles
The centre of Hummelo was established in 828 on a river dune near Landgoed Enghuizen. The estate was first mentioned as a Havezate in 1326; only fragments of natural stone at the estate remain as reminders of Kasteel Enghuizen. The dates refer to different historical milestones: the establishment of the village centre and the estate’s first mention as a Havezate.
The Dorpskerk was built in 1838 on the site of an older church, first mentioned in 1328. The protected village landscape adds a perspective on Hummelo as a village to this architectural history. Another architectural landmark is Het Wapen van Heeckeren: this single-storey building with a transverse wing dates from the early 19th century and has a hipped roof. At the church, the focus is on the sequence of the older church and its replacement; at the Wapen, the defining features are its design and roof.
The building now known as De Gouden Karper has been used as an inn or brewery since 1642. This history of use adds another perspective on Hummelo’s past, alongside the church chronology and architectural styles.
Cycling Routes and Getting Around the Village
The Monumentenroute Hummelo-Keppel-Drempt passes through Hummelo and along Landgoed Enghuizen. The Bronckhorster landleven cycling route covers a wider area: it runs through the municipality of Bronckhorst along a centuries-old trade route and is surrounded by forests, pastures and fields. This distinction is useful for planning: Hummelo is explicitly on the Monumentenroute, while Bronckhorster landleven describes the wider landscape at municipal level.
Hummelo is also home to a life-size bronze monument to the rock band Normaal. The Tegelroute starts behind the statue near Kasteelzicht, making the monument a specific landmark for the route’s starting point.
Wet Woodland and Activities
The Hekenbroek wet woodland nature reserve lies near Hummelo. It is home to many species of butterflies and fungi, as well as toads and salamanders. Visitors can explore the area on foot between sunrise and sunset, so plan your walk within this time frame. While the village landscape and architectural history are shaped by buildings and historical dates, here the woodland character and species found in the area define the nature-focused part of a stay.
Alpaca Boerderij Hummelo offers a Meet & Greet with close contact with alpacas. Cyclists and walkers can stop at Het Wapen van Heeckeren for coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Confirm the Meet & Greet in advance and check the drinks on offer before your visit.
