Neede brings together several distinct themes for a stay: the landscape of Needse Achterveld, the geology of Needse Berg, as well as exhibitions, a mill and a museum. There are also two specific trail lengths to help you plan your walks: the route through Achterveld can be shortened, while the Geological Nature Trail crosses Needse Berg and an area of former sand and clay pits. Nature, geology and culture each offer a different focus for planning your trip.
Landscape and Walking Trails
Needse Achterveld combines wet heathland, fens, swamp forest, dry heathland, juniper and woodland. The landscape ranges from wet areas with fens and swamp forest to dry heathland and vegetation such as juniper and woodland. Needse Achterveld is one of the last remaining wet heathland areas in the Netherlands. Its rarity makes this landscape a particularly distinctive highlight. The official walking route through the area is 4.4 kilometres long, follows narrow footpaths and can be shortened to 2.8 kilometres. The shorter option reduces the distance by 1.6 kilometres, offering a clear choice between the full route and a shorter walk.
Geology of Needse Berg
Needse Berg, a glacial push moraine formed by the continental ice sheet during the penultimate glacial period, lies directly north of Neede. The Geological Nature Trail crosses Needse Berg and is an approximately 4.3-kilometre walking route through an area of former sand and clay pits. Compared with the 4.4-kilometre route through Achterveld, the stated distances are almost the same, but the themes described are different: narrow footpaths in Needse Achterveld on one route, and Needse Berg and former sand and clay pits on the other. When choosing a route, you can therefore take both its length and its landscape or geological focus into account.
Exhibitions, Museum and Mill
The De Canon van Neede exhibition can be seen in the Filter at Natuurpark Kronenkamp; there are also temporary exhibitions. The Sinterklaas Museum in Neede tells the story of the Dutch children's celebration of Sinterklaas and houses an extensive collection of Sinterklaas items. The Hollandsche Molen offers another historical connection: it is a grain mill that began operating in 1927. The themes are clearly distinct: an exhibition about Neede, the history of the Sinterklaas celebration along with a collection, and the history of a grain mill. The year 1927 gives the mill a historical connection, while the temporary exhibitions in the Filter offer a different cultural focus.
Events Throughout the Year
The Nationale Jammarkt Neede takes place annually and focuses on jam, preserves, jelly, chutney and related products. Survival Neede also takes place annually, in October; the event has been on the calendar since 1990. The events offer different highlights: the Jammarkt is defined by its range of products, while the recurring month provides a seasonal reference point for Survival Neede. The exact dates for Survival Neede vary from year to year. Check the latest event dates if you are planning your trip around it; it is also worth checking the date of the Jammarkt before you plan.
